Default Ruger 77/17 WSM (Final ground squirrel shoot of the year)

Woke up at 5:00am to beat the heat. Loaded up and headed for a last hooray this morning. Killing squeaks was on the agenda.

I was a bit surprised any ground vermin were still "out" this time of year. Several weeks with temps in the 90's usually puts them down for the season around my neck of the woods.

I will say that I was lucky to find some out; it was slim pickings. I shot 100 rounds from 7:00am to 10:00am. That is extremely slow in a field that was full of squeaks 3 weeks ago.
With nobody else having access to shoot; I happened to find a few squirrels greedy enough to be packing on the pounds in this blistering heat. Fat little buggers this time of year.

Sitting in the comforting shade, it was a slow and relaxing morning.

Most shots were 150 yards out to 278 yards, with confirmed kills at 278.

This little Ruger sure makes easy work out of it.

I was using the American Eagle Labeled (Winchester made) 20gr loads.

A few hits at 170 yards launched the critters 5 feet in the air (no kidding). Have shot a lot of squeaks with the .17 WSM and haven't seen any get that high until today; I was thoroughly impressed to say the least.

Thanks to a member here I was able to try out a Volquartsen sear (for the first time). I bought and installed the sear bringing my trigger down to 2.5lbs crisp. Perfect.

I usually spring/stone my own triggers, but ran across a great deal from a member on a new Volquartsen target sear/spring. I thought I would give it a try since It only cost me $30 shipped....Thanks AGAIN!!

Default Thanks for sharing you last trip this year with us...

I wonder if the extra weight they put on helps to get em launched a bit higher.
The pics really show off that nice wood too.

Sweet, you likely got in more Varmint shooting than we can get in a year working at it.

Thanks Matt and Gerald.

Sure is a pretty rifle. One of my favorites.

Shoots pretty decent too.

I went out this morning, the 100 yard range was tied up so I shot at 50 off a pic nick table.......not the ideal setup, but worked well enough.

The rifle had 100 rounds through the barrel from yesterdays squirrel shoot, and I left it dirty for this mornings range session.

I wanted to shoot this thing on paper again, since It has around 500 rounds through it now since break in.

I've only shot a few groups with this rifle, everything else has been killing squeaks.

Groups shot one after the other. No cold bore/dirty barrel fliers or issues.

You can see a difference in POI from the 20gr American Eagle to the new Winchester 15gr LF.

Both shoot well enough for me, not quite as tight as my MGM T/C contender carbine, but tight enough.

Now I've got the rifle soaking.........gonna clean it up real nice and put it away till next season.

It looks like you had fun, Austin. Now you can start saving for a good 17WSM.....
