That kinda says it all about sub-sonic performance, doesn't it.
The .223 will also have a fast rate of twist compared to a .221.

I’m trying to get down to 1050 FPS so it doesn’t appear they will expand for me either. Thanks for the info, very helpful

I appreciate the offer of the cast bullets but I’m hoping to use a jacketed bullet. Starting to think it a fruitless endeavor without rebarreling to something like a .22 squirrel

Some may know this, but to benefit everyone, JBM Balistics maintains quite a bullet info. data section which includes length.

Love the 50 gr sx out of my 223 AR's for coyote(fur friendly even on raccoon) I start them at 3200. Easy to load sub moa, no exit. Even head shots stay in the skull out to about 150 yards. Probably a good home defense round.

Trail Boss in a 22 Hornet makes a nice subsonic combo that offers an off the shelf solution that doesn't require special dies. The Lee 22 Bator mold that drops ~55 grain bullets are stable and accurate in my Ruger 77/22 (1/14) with 3.4gr of Trail Boss.

Yep, that is what I use in 221fb subsonic loads.

Was wondering if a cast flat nose might be best for subsonic.

Another option is the Armscor 40gr JHP. This bullet has an exposed lead tip. It’s quite accurate for me and very inexpensive when available.
