I haven't used alkanet root with tung oil but find the tung oil does darken the wood.
I wasn't sure what I'd end up with when I did the Remington stock as it was already a darkish bit of Black Walnut, but I'm happy with the outcome, that English yew on the grip cap and forend tip really starts a few conversations.
