Back in the late 50's we used to buy the 50 pound kegs of surplus 4831 and divey it up between a few guys. One guys method of loading his 270 win was to dip the primed case into the the powder and level off the powder even with the case mouth, seat the bullet and go shoot. Worked for him.
Years later he ran out of the surplus and bought the new canister stuff and proceeded to load in his old customary way. Didn't work for him.
He now has a wall-hanger that has the bolt permanently locked up forever and ever.
Luckily, he suffered no serious injury except maybe his ego.

270 case full huh? An interesting version of the Lee Dippers, albeit without the handle.

"When changing ANY components, always start low and work according to pressure signs, of course."

What Lunde Sr. noted above, was normal loading practice for a number of ctgs. using the original 4831.

That method was also Ackley's method of loading the .17AH with IMR4198.

A few months ago I was wanting to compare 4831 and 4831sc. I was told
"they are chemically the same, use the chart for 4831 and you can't go wrong".

Also; for you guys that don't know all the facts of life yet: Hodgdon does NOT mfg powder at all of any kind. They buy boat loads from ADI in Australia in big drums, then repackage it.

I think they also import IMR from Egypt, AA powders too, no doubt some others. Reading their propaganda they do a great job of leading you to believe they mfg all they handle.

St. Marks in Florida makers the Trail Boss I think, as well as 1 or more of "their" powders are made in Canada.

Being a much slower burn rate than most other powders that get talked about here it isn't near as significant possibly but the "new" H4831 and H4831SC are "Extreme Powders" that Hodgdon touts as being more temperature stable as well as having less lot to lot variation than the older offerings.
