17 Remington preferred powders
Looking for some feedback on favorite 17 Remington powders for Hornady 25 gr hp's. I developed a load of 22.8 gr. Benchmark that shot extremely well but when I got out into the dogtowns, starting piercing a few primers (1 out of every 20 rds or so) but other primers showed definite signs of flowing that weren't evident in prior load development. This load is .5 gr. under max in Hodgdons manual and frankly the first rifle I've ever had issues with a load listed under book max. My fault for not paying attention to chrony velocities.
Rifle is a Tikka Continental Varmint, 10 twist. Powders I currently have in suggested burn rate are Varget, H4198, Benchmark, Imr8208, W748. Would like to move toward the W748 even though it's temp sensitive as I have an abundant supply of this. Any direction or guidance appreciated. I'm not asking for specific load info. as this rifle looks to be a touchy critter but your thoughts are welcomed. |

I've been thru this, pulling a bunch of bullets out on the prairie.
Slow em down, it don't make much difference for what you are doing. It's hot out there. 2 gr under max is a lot safer. It ain't the rifle, it's the weather. Kenny

Had the same issues with my .223. Good load, shot well etc.
Barrel heated up, temp was 105 that day. Left one in the chamber while we moved positions maybe ten minutes. Two of us shooting one rifle, about 80 rounds by then in just over an hour. Crap hit me in the face, stuck case, primer was pierced. Gunsmith gave me hell for: "hot loads, hot guns in hot weather, cut it back a couple grains". By then it had all cooled down enough the case came right out and no damage other than the primer.

You didn't say what primers you are using. Remington 7 1/5's are much softer than CCI 450's or BR4's, I blow the Remingtons inn my 17-204 while the 450's and BR4's look perfect. Larry

H4895 always provided excellent accuracy and speed in my 17 Rem.

Winchester 760 is too slow for 25gr bullets, perfect for the 30gr ones. Reloader 15 is generally considered the go to powder in the 17 Remington and 25gr bullets. Larry

I've loaded for a bunch of 17 Remington rifles since the early 1970's, and as hard as I've tried to switch to quite a few other powders, I've always migrated back to IMR4198 with 25 grain Hornady or Remington HP bullets.

17 Rem powder
If it won't shoot with IMR 4320 the gun probably has a problem.
