I'm pretty sure Berger says 1-7tw for the 55's for those who may want to shoot them in things like a standard 204 Ruger and at the 3200-ish FPS range a case that size will shoot the 55's, a 1-7tw would be applicable.

I have a super hot rod .20cal going together right now that'll shoot the 55's well over 4000 FPS and it's getting a 1-8tw Krieger.

To achieve the highest BC down range you have to spin them faster than just marginally stabilized. My guess as to why Berger recommends a faster twist than it takes to keep them from keyholing at short range.

my 20-250 AI is shooting 55's at 3770 fps with a 26 in pacnor barrel, 8 tw. It shoots good at that speed. It can be made to go faster...just bumping near 4000 fps... but accuracy is not the best. My friend and I have the same setups, and we can't imagine it going faster with any kind of accuracy.... or barrel life. These things shine past 400 yds. If you don't shoot farther, then there's no need to build a hotrod wildcat. Lighter bullets don't hold a candle to the BC of the 55s... unless your shooting less than 400... then BC doesn't really matter that much.

Sir:

Where did you find an 8 twist Krieger in .20 cal.? Did not think they went below 10 twist.

Thanks,

Jordan

A couple of comments. Berger changed the B.C on the 55 gr 20 cal. a while back. It used to be .381 for a long time. It is now .354. For years I've shot that bullet in the 20 BR at 3650 fps in both Kreiger and Barlein 1:9 twist barrels. It has always stabilized to at least 500 yds and beyond. The current 20 BR I'm shooting has a 1050 rds through it...(and is very tired)...but I still managed to hit (5) GS's at Winnemucca with it this past week at 500-520 yds. To say it has throat erosion is an understatement! It is still shooting okay...but I don't see that happening much further. I have not seated the bullets out any further. It is the exact same load I've shot for the last few years. As for a Kreiger 20 cal in 1:8 twist I have not seen that myself, but they did make it in 1:9 twist at one time. I've had a couple of those. Bruno's is still showing a 1:9 twist Kreiger for sale in 20 cal, although Kreiger's site only shows a 1:10 twist anymore. Things change I guess. B23, if you are able to make a large capacity 20 cal do 4000 +, I'd sure like to hear how that works out. I've already tried that one...which turned out to be a disaster. Hopefully someone can make that work. 410gauge

I'm running them at 3640 fps out of a 8 1/2tw PacNor Sarge. 600 ft. And temps from 75-90 degrees with my come ups matching Applied Ballastics S/W. Hope this helps you out.

PacNor is a barrel manufacturer and Sarge is an abbreviated form of Sargent. I hope this helps...

My gunsmith actually ordered the barrel from Krieger direct but when I was looking for a 1-8tw .20cal barrel I started calling around to different barrel makers. As I'm sure you already know Krieger barrels are single point cut so they can pretty much make you anything you want. The part that sucks is when you order an uncommon barrel that they don't get much call for, like a 8tw .20 Cal, the wait time could be quite a bit longer. I actually wanted a 28in. finished length 8tw .20cal barrel but Krieger told me the max length they'll do in a bore that small is one that'll finish at 26in. I guess keeping that tiny little hole straight when they bore the hole is more difficult with the little guys and gets even more difficult to keep it straight the longer it is. I also talked to the guys at Bartlein and they told me pretty much the same thing, they can make you just about anything, within reason, but how long it will take to get the barrel could be anywhere from 3 months to a year wait time. Ugh!

This is somewhat of a new creation for my gunsmith so only time will tell. I know their test gun shot 4080 w/55's and it hadn't pressured out yet so it'll be interesting to see where the accuracy loads end up. If it shoots in the .3's and only goes 4000fps w/55's, I think I can live with that. lol
