Measuring Shoulder Angle?
I was wondering if there was a quick and easy way of measuring shoulder angle on cartridge brass. I have come across quite a few wildcat cases and thought it would be useful. Do you just eyeball the case with a protractor? I have tools to measure cartridge case length and shoulder bump, but not the actual angle of the shoulder.
Thanks. |

A protractor should work. It depends on how accurately you want the measurement.
Most IMP ctgs are 30, 35 or 40 degrees. The Dumoulin ctgs. were a bit sharper and may even have had the double radius like WTBY - or the WTBY radius was like the Dumoulin shoulders. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the Dumoulin shoulders. It's kinda like a bunny's tail - short and fuzzy. (my memory, that is)

The best way to measure shoulder angle would be to use an optical comparator, if you have access to a machine shop. If not, do the best with a protractor, like Daryl said. If you have never heard of an optical comparator, read this link:

'Bout as low tech as you can get.... Bend a paper clip or wire to match. Put it on paper and lengthen the lines then measure. It will get you pretty darn close.
