Exclamation OT - Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not here but I thought I'd post it. There is a recall on SOME Kidde fire extinguishers. I found out about this some time ago on a boat forum I frequent but finally got around to checking mine. I have at least 5 Kidde extinguishers, one in each boat, the camper and a few in the house. Two of my 5 were recalled. Below is a link with information about the recall, and how to tell if your extinguishers are affected.

http://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/...-extinguisher/

If you determine you have one or more that are affected, there's a button on the bottom of this page that says "affected". Click on that and fill in the information required. It will ask your name and address and then go to another screen where you input your model, year, serial number etc.

From what I'm told, they will send you replacements for free. You do need to send the old ones back. But, they don't say they have to be FULL. The guys on the boating forum recommend using the recalled extinguishers (or at least trying to if they don't malfunction) to demonstrate to your wife, kids, etc. the proper use of the extinguisher. Pull the pin, aim, squeeze, sweep, etc. It's fine and dandy they know where the extinguisher is, but they should have the knowledge of how to actually use one, before a panic situation sets in.

IT COULD SAVE YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE!!!

Charlie

Thanks for the heads up, I purchased one for my boat last summer. In my fishing league a boat motor burned up during the championship, so I added a second to the boat, the New one is on the recall list.

Got a replacement for a recalled extinguisher a few months ago. Kidde promptly replaced the recalled one in about two weeks after contacting them and send a prepaid Fedex shipping label to return the recalled extinguisher.

Charlie:

Thanks for letting us know about this.

Funny thing, I have a buddy that works for them.
In CO/Spgs. Will ask Mike what the deal is.

Default KIdde recall problem

Ok guys, I talked this over with Mike that works for them.

He asked if it was the 40lb unit, or half million defective smoke detectors thinks made in Mexico.

They're made in China, the chinks are getting even with Americans again.

He says: "there's a yellow seal that breaks when used, if it's shut off it won't work the next time you pull the trigger. Something like 40 million of those got out before it was discovered.

CHECK YOURS!! IF you can, remove that YELLOW seal and it's fixed. They've been replacing them with a metal seal on the returns and stock.
Mike says: get a Tri point screw driver to take it apart, no danger, just take it down to where you can get the yellow tab seal out. Put it back
together and it's safe and will work. That's all they do when they come back.

Place on CO Spgs is just a R&D place, they're all either made in Mexico or China.
Several bigwigs have been fired over these problems.

Bob: From China or Mexico??

HA!
Hope it's a good one in case you need it. That's the wrong time
to find out one don't work. Especially on a boat.
