Cutting a few inches off of a 17 Hornet doesn't really change the velocity much at all. I have two CZ 527 Varmint model 17 Hornets, one of them I had the barrel cut back to 21in. when it was in getting threaded. Depending on the day there's between 50-60 fps difference between the two.
On the one I had a few inches cut off, if I recall, it dropped about 1/2-3/4 of a pound. I've had many different barrels shortened on rifles and never had a single one that didn't shoot as good or better than it did before I had it cut off. My CZ 527 Varmint, that hasn't been shortened, wears a Vortex HD LH 3-15x42 with Warne rings and weighs 8lbs 2oz. The same scope and rings on the American model would probably weigh right around 7.5lbs so if the OP cuts his Varmint model CZ 17 Hornet back to 20in it'll weigh within a couple ounces of the American and potentially shoot 30-40fps slower but the barrel will be substantially stiffer. For me, it's a no brainer, I'll take a larger profile and stiffer barrel every time. Last edited by B23; 05-22-2020 at 09:08 PM. |
