Default 45 Auto / 12 ga. Conversion Build

This is one of a couple thousand barrel liner projects done over the years, and I thought I would show a couple of pictures of what goes into building a barrel liner for a shotgun barrel. There are however a few steps that were purposely left out, as all trade secrets are NOT revealed.

Depending on gun used, action design and overall strength of the receiver, everything has to be taken into account when building a specific barrel liner for each specific gun.

The most popular cartridges chambered in these guns are as follows:

17 Ackley Hornet

22 K-Hornet

25 acp

218 Bee

219 Zipper

219 Zipper Improved

25-20

25-35

30 Carbine

300 Blackout

32-20

327 Federal

44-40

9mm

38 special

40 S&W

45 Auto / 45 Auto Rim

Here is a 45 Auto Rim that I built for myself (327 Federal is next) using a barrel liner.

Shotgun barrel work first! The chamber end was reamed dry and left with a rough finish on purpose.

The barrel was also drilled/tapped for a scope base.

It will take me a little while to add all pictures, so if you would, please wait till the last of the pictures are shown before posting anything. Thanks guys!

The barrel liner is being chambered, then the rim counter-bore will be cut for the use of 45 Auto Rim cases.

The bushings are then cut and reamed to fit on each end of the barrel liner, which are then secured in place.

Barrel liner has been cut and crowned at 19 1/2" and the shotgun barrel will be left full length at 31 1/2".

Barrel liner has been "permanently" installed inside of shotgun barrel.

The final build!

Addendum:

The trigger has been adjusted down to 2 pounds 12 oz..

The barrel has been stamped - "45 AR"

Testing will have to wait until dryer weather, because there is 2 to 4 inches of standing water at my shooting range!

Test bullets will be as follows -

Hornady 230 gr. XTP

Speer 230 gr. Gold Dot

Speer 260 gr. Mag-JHP

Hornady 250 gr. XTP

Hornady 225 gr. XTP

The only factory loads that will be tested are Federals 210 gr. and 230 gr. Hydra-Shok loads.

All accuracy testing will be done at 50 yards and all velocity testing will be at 15 feet.

No loads will ever exceed a maximum pressure limit of 21,000 psi - which is in accordance with the s.a.a.m.i. guidelines.

Ok guys, what do you think?

And yes, I am going to leave the shotgun barrel full length, unless it proves to be a hindrance to accuracy. If it does, I will start cutting and crowning the shotgun barrel in 2" increments at a time, checking for noticeable improvements in accuracy.

I just couldn't leave well enough alone!

Shotgun barrel was 31 1/2" in length and is now 22" long with the permanently installed 19 1/2" 45 AR / .45 Auto rifle barrel. Now, it handles more like a rifle than a shotgun!

ALL BULLETS tested at 50 yards will keep bullet holes touching with the same exact load, with the only change made being that of the bullet used!

For a short range deer "rifle", I am quite impressed with this little gun!

David how much did the muzzle blast increase when you shorten nearly 10''?

ray h,

there was absolute zero muzzle blast increase after shortening the barrel from 31 1/2" down to 22"!

I set up my "decimal reader" when shooting both barrel lengths, and the decimal readings were so close to identical, you could actually say they remained unchanged.

I don't know exactly how to describe the "sound" I heard when shooting the longer barrel, but as best I can describe it, it sounded like some sort of "echo" or "ring", but after shortening the barrel, that sound completely went away!

I have just finished a 38 special with an 18" rifled barrel in a 20" shotgun barrel, and it is much more quiet than what the .45 is, but it just don't hit no where near as hard! Super accurate though!

Thanks David, glad you used a decimal meter, smart move. I know the 6'' between my ears sure does gives me a lot of false finding. I have a crappy Sav. action with .473 bolt face laying here. Your build makes me want to build one but I don't need another project. Thanks for sharing.
