I took my SW66 predator hunting for that very reason, mountain lions. Never had to use it on a kitty but i did manage a few really really close coyotes though.

For those that carry, is the 9mm better all around than the 38/357 combo? I prefer to carry it and use the gun for hunting, and if a SHTF situation occurs, it will be there. I have tried the 357, 38spl, 9mm, 40 and 45acp all back to back and really like the 9mm, but I have no problem holding a 357mag still in a double action during steady fire. The 9mm seems to be a step up over the 38spl, but the 357 is a big step up over the 9mm.
Since I hope to never have to use the pistol against a human critter, it seems that the 357 is the better option. It will cover everything from rabbit to black bear. But I have never met a 9mm that I didn't like! Or am I just thinking about this wrong? |

I like any revolver 357 or larger. Carry 6" Python a lot. Old school single actions are great. What ever feels good in your hand. Never cared for 9mm. I love blue steel and walnut on all my guns.

Just to be a smart-alec, combine your thinking...
The fellas at the local indoor Law Enforcement range have been playing with a 1911 style pistol in .357 magnum. It's a damn HOOT to shoot. I forget who makes it but it's puts one hell of a fireball out the business end... S |

I guess they call this a kit gun, something you throw in your kit when on the go. Doesn't stovepipe, jam, short stroke and only takes one hand to use, try an clear a pistol jam with one hand. S&W model 64 38spl, the ultimate point and click.

If you walk long distances while hunting keep in mind how much weight you are adding
Revolvers are reliable but less rounds, some tend to be heavy and long. I would buy towards one goal. Whatever presents you the most danger and am most likely to run across. I carry a 9mm every day and trust my life to it. With that said I'm not facing bears every day either. This thread will turn into Chevy or ford. Find what you shoot well and find easy to carry. If its heavy or cumbersome you will leave it at home. It won't do you any good at home.

I carry a 4-5/8" Ruger 44 Mag or my Les Baer 6" 1911. Either of them will dispatch any baddies I may run into here on the East Coast which would more than likely be 2 legged rather than 4.

I've never had a jam with my S&W 625 .45acp 3". The size of the hole at the end of the barrel tends to create an instant impression when it's pointed at you. Semi's, not so much.

Carry Gun
I drive a sales truck every day. I carry a pistol every day at the urging( didn't take much) of my boss. I started out with myglock 27 in .40 s&w. as it got warmer, I switched to my sig p938 or sig 238. they fit in my pocket, and no one is the wiser.
