Help with fur friendly fox bullet
I need to send out my end of a recent trade and both the other party to the trade and I need some help in deciding what bullets make the most sense for fur-friendly use on foxes. Can some of the fox hunters advise which of the following bullets would work best for preserving fox fur?
Hornady 25 grain Vmax Berger 15 grain, 18 grain, 22 grain, 25 grain, 30 grain flat base but none of the 25 grain target bullets that many use for coyotes. Nagel bullets 25 grain Kindler bullets - 23 and 30 grain 25 grain (long discontinued) Remington bullets that are said to be good for coyotes How about it guys, do any of the above work well for foxes? Thanks for your advice!

You didn't say what cartridge you will be using. Any of the 25 gr. h.p. will work and some of the lighter bullets mentioned if they are also a h.p. and you don't push them to fast. 30's will work also...

17 Ackley Hornet
You are right Tim - i asked this question and was told he would likely use the 17 Ackley Hornet for fox hunting.
Thanks

if that's the case then stick with the 15 gr. up to 25 gr. stay with the h.p..
The 30 gr. would work also(if he has the right twist) but would behave more like a fmj. and not get much if any expansion which could be a good thing or bad ... |

Fox Friendly
Gary,
If he's shooting a 17 AH, the bullet I had the most luck with was the orginal Berger 20 gr Match (Non-MEF). Many many many side shots, frontal shots, quartering shots and no exits. I was running them about 3850 out of a 24" barrel using VN120. If the 18's you have will stabilize in his rifle, and aren't the MEF, they should work. Just my two Lincolns -Darrell |

Thanks for the info
This thread is great!
I have a 17 Rem and a 17AH being built up. Up to now I was using 22Hornet with Sierra 45grainers. I have decided to run the 17AH instead, as I hear there is less sewing! There was some discussion about Nosler's 25 gr, no poly tip, by a guy from the UK. Better performance than the V Max types which seem to be too volatile was the thought. In the 17AH I would think that is about as heavy as I want to go, keeping the balance towards velocity instead. Does that sound right? Thanks |

I bet the fox doesn't think any of them are too friendly .
I have shot some fox with the 17 rem and 25 gr Hornady H.P. driven hard . No exit holes . Chris

When Nosler sell 'em for $7.50 per hundred they get everywhere! Ken.

7.50 per hundred?
If that's dollars and not pounds sterling, I need to stock up!
I too think it was Wally, maybe he can chime in here as well. Be interested to know his velocity range that was doing well without exiting. Tom |
