Not small caliber
I have had a couple of run ins with multiple two legged critters and one close call with three 4 legged ones while out predator hunting at night in the last couple of years. Since I hunt by myself until late hours, I am going to get a pistol. After looking around, I have narrowed it down to a semi auto 9mm or a revolver in 357mag. The 357 has a 6" barrel and the 9mm has close to the same. I am not looking for trouble, but if there is any, I would feel better if I did not have to rely on a bolt action rifle.
How many carry a pistol while out hunting? What do you carry and why did you choose it. I feel like the 357 is the most flexible all around between the two, but I like them both. Any good advice? Thanks, Qaz |

Carry pistol
Springfield XDS 4" in 45 acp. Lightweight, compact and about as reliable as a rock. I added night sights and a laser especially for the 2-legged varmints.
I am seldom without it.

I keep a Colt Commander in 9mm with Hornady personal defense ammo. It is light and holds 9 rounds of ammo, but I would recommend night sights unless you are good at point shooting.
My next caliber of choice would be a 38 Super, I am looking for a Commander in that but have yet to find one, otherwise that'd be the one I have. Eric |

I pack my P-30, and it has 30 rds in the mag and it's sister rides the belt.
I am NEVER out of reach from it. Old habits Die hard. Tia, Don

I usually bring my full size Taurus 24/7 in .40 when I'm in the woods. Reasons being, that concealment isn't a factor, it holds 16 rounds, and it's not 9mm or smaller. I've brought my 9mm out a few times, but I'm always thinking if that will be enough, depending on the size of the varmint.

In the peoples republic of NJ carrying a handgun while hunting is a no no. Except for when one is on their own property. In that case I carry a Sig 226 in .40 or my Firestar M43 in 9MM.

I carry a Glock M26 daily but when I hunt big game or the back country, My usual carry is a 41 mag 4 5/8" barrel Blackhawk (4 digit serial number) that I have carried since 1966. Best insurance money I ever spent.
