Default 22 wmr

Anyone have experience with after market drop in barrels? Had a 77/22 Mag which had lousy accuracy no matter what I fed it. Not sure if I want to dabble with trying to improve the accuracy of a caliber I find effective past 125yds on a coyote?

Re-barrel it to a 17 HMR.. think you would like that one much better, overall.

If I was going out the door specifically for coyotes, I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a 22 WMR than I would with a 17 HMR in the 100-150 yard range. And yes, folks, I know that the 17 HMR will kill coyotes. I've done it myself.........

That said, if you like the Model 77 Ruger rifles, have you tried to shim the bolt to improve head space? Kits to perform that easy task are available on the internet. I had a friend who pulled his hair out trying to get a Ruger 77 in 22 WMR to shoot well. One 0.002" bolt shim turned it into a different rifle accuracy wise. What else have you tried?

I currently own 2 very accurate rifles chambered in 22WMR. One is a semi-auto Magnum Research Lite (40 grain+ bullets only due to the under barrel dampner) and the other is a CZ Model 455. Both dispel internet rumors that no 22 WMR rifle can be accurate because all of the available ammunition is inaccurate.

Dan Lilja -

His barrels in .22 LR have won Olympic Gold.

First things first. Check your headspace and shim if needed. Then check your bedding. Mine is a Hornet, but they are very similar, and horrible dose not come close to how it came out of the factory. Several companies have made or make barrels for the 77/22m, with the low price end Green Mountain to Shilen and Lilja. They all can shoot very well. I would not bet on any of those out shooting the other.

My 22 WMR is a CZ452. With ammo it likes, it will shoot 5/8 to 3/4" groups of 5 at 100 yds. I found it likes the lighter (30-40gr) bullets better than the heavier 50gr bullets. Trying to understand that, years ago I used a Sinclair 'nut' comparator to measure the head to ogive length on all the 22WMR ammo I could find. That distance varied widely between brands and types, and helped rank the ammo it likes.

Got rid of the Ruger long ago; just thinking about getting a bolt WMR and liking the CZ over another Ruger. Now that there's a much wider selection of loads available.
Thanks for the tip on the comparetor. Been using one for a while but not for RF.

My rifle liked the 33 -35gr tipped bullets like Remington Express and the Winchester Extreme (black box) the best, but still does okay with the plain silver box 40gr Winchester. But I have not looked at all the recent choices since the RF market has changed so much.

The 33 gr Remington Premier ammo was outstanding in the accuracy department and fast too. The old Federal Premium with the 30 gr. Sierra HP was excellent as well.
