Redding type S dies and wildcatting?
Hello all, with the bullets.com closeout specials I have my eyes set on a die set or two, three my question is i've read that you can use the type s bushing dies from redding (FL) to form cases for wildcats just by bushing/expander changes. now my question is how far can you go with them?
ie. if I get a 20 caliber die could I open up the die and go as far as 6mm? and conversely how far down can you go like from 22 to 17? thanks for those who have some feedback on the subject. |

I have taken a 300wsm and turned it into a 6.5 and 223 to a 20 prac.As far as going up its going to depend on the size ot the neck area. If you call Redding they may be able to tell you.

Hello SS.
I use a .222 S type die with a smaller bush to create .20-222 cases. Your would normally need 2x bushes and neck down in two steps, however I use a .222 neck sizing die with the expander ball removed for the intermediate step. A friend over here in Aust (Camel here on the forum) uses the same approach to turn .222 cases into .17-222 cases. Marcus |

Redding used to say that you could go up or down one caliber.

Yeah, I use one for 17/222, 20/222, 222 and 250 Myra, which is what you fellas call a 25 Copperhead, though ours was invented first. |

a while ago I necked down 6.5 Lap to 6mm and recently took that brass down to 22 with bushings
However I could not get 6br brass to 20 no matter how many different bushings I used until a friend leant me a 22 br forming die |

Yeah well I thought our American friends might get the wrong end of the stick if referred to you as my "mate".
Besides, it gives you a goal to work towards - a good friend Marcus |
