Default Moly removal help

When I recently started to remove the moly coating from some bullets I discovered that I was out of my original blue Dawn dishwashing liquid detergent. The new and “improved” Dawn is a creamy green and apparently not the same mix of chemicals as it did very little to remove the moly. I found another blue “non-concentrated” Dawn that gave me the same results as the green detergent.

Does anyone have another concoction they have successfully used to remove moly? If so, I would like to hear about it.

Thanks,

Sorry to hear of the product changes. I knew they had a couple different flavors of Dawn, but the Blue is the only on I used/bought. Make sure you use the very hottest water you can get, as that really makes a difference, in my experience.

I just looked on line and discovered that there are two blue Dawn branded detergents. One is called Ultra and the other is called Platinum. The old bottle I still have is called Power Plus. Hope this helps.

Default Question

Has anyone tried tumbling moly coated bullets in a slurry with stainless steel cartridge cleaning pins? Any thoughts as to the outcome?

I hate to damage any bullets by doing this but I might experiment if nobody has tried it.

I tumble them in walnut media with some flitz or osso brass polisher. They come out shiny and all traces of moly removed.

Default Moly removal

I use Bar Keepers Friend, I place the coated bullets in a plastic container pour in and shake several times and let it soak for a few days. Next, rinse with water and let dry. Been getting good results

Based on periodically tumbling some live range rounds, mostly 5.56 and 9mm, in with spent brass, there may be some potential issues:
1. Bullet tip will be rounded off.
2. Erosion of softer metals, such as lead and copper.

Assuming that we are discussing moly coated, copper jacketed bullets...
If the copper jacket is really thin then it may wear along bottom edge of body/base. Also, if bullet has a copper jacket with exposed lead base then some erosion will occur..

Default Wet Moly

I wet moly PD bullets in a dedicated vibratory tumbler bowl..... no pins or beads.... just bullets.

It takes very little moly and the right amount of water, just enough to wet the bullets and moly, not really a slurry, and let vibrate until water has evaporated. I use a fan to increase evaporation if needed. If your bowl is seasoned and you don't add too much moly there will be no moly left loose in the bowl.

Remove them from bowl and place on a beach towel. A shoe shine motion rolls the bullets in the towel removing any excess moly.....usually very little.

I can load with little to no moly transfer to my fingers.

20's are hard to handle.... very slippery.
