Default 20vt

Dad has had a couple of FBs over the years. Nice rifles. Fun to shoot. He presently has a Cooper in .17 FB, and it is very nice. But my Savage action, Shilen barrel 20VT beats his beautiful Cooper every time in every way - except looks. I mostly shoot Remington brass. Deburr, form in a single pass through a Redding 17 Mach IV body die, turn the necks, never do it again, and it shoots to my level of capability. I did buy some Nosler cases, but saw no difference in groups. Lot of guys on here are way more meticulous than me, and they wring out that extra .1 - .2 inches, but that VT is my favorite rifle. But if I could only have 1 rifle (heaven forbid) I'd go with my Kimber .223 - capable from gophers to mule deer and pretty to boot.

TeanCum1:

I feel you're right about the VT, have one myself.
New Cooper M-38 I got from Philip in CA. Lovely rifle.
Haven't shot it enough to know the gun yet, never
at anything other than paper, or thru the chrongraph
developing a load.

I own both. I have considered selling my .221 a few times, my 20VT will never go anywhere.

I have both also, Cooper classic m38 in 221fb and Cooper varminter m38 in 20vt. I feel like the 20vt is good for 75-100 yds more than the 221 for groundhogs. The 20vt is more accurate, and is better in the wind. I have a CZ 527 221fb I want to get threaded for a suppressor but really want to turn it into a 20vt. You really cant go wrong with either.

Man I WISH it solved all my problems
shucks, I'd be tickled if it only helped half of them!

Two .17 VR's, M2, VT, .223, then a truck load of bigger stuff.

Shucks, I used up two jugs of it just on .223's one year.
and five of 'em in four years.

Great powder for sure. Shocked me when they took it off the market a few
years. My supplier had a bunch of it, so I bought 6 jugs just so I wouldn't run out. Guess what? Yeah, long ago!!
Well I don’t use it in .17H, .22H, .222,.223, .20P, ..204, .17FB or 6BR. I am sure it would work for many but I have my favorites. I am going to try the newA2200 in the .17H however.

I have a couple of each in my Dakota assortment and have ended up being a 20 cal fan for sure, but the 221 FB would be my 2nd favorite. Using 1680 & 40 V-Max, I get 3600 out of mine with .2 accuracy. My 20 VT's with 2200 & 32's gets me up to a reliable 3750 with about the same accuracy, but they seem to shoot flatter than the charts say. My real 1st love these days are the 20-221FB AI & the 20-223AI - performance way past what you'd expect, but that wasn't the question.

So the next question is on brass forming. Would I just run it through a .20VT die with out the expander and neck turn as needed, then anneal or is there more to it. I have read a few different methods and they seem to be all different. Hope to get the rifle sent out next week .
