Memories
I believe I’ve had most of those back in the late 60s and into the 70s.
Wish I’d have saved the containers. |

I used some, if not most of those a few years back. Still have a couple of the containers, with some powder inside.. Just for old time sake I guess.

I sold a bunch of those, sans powder, on ebay. There's a market for them.

A guy I worked with back in the late 80's sold me some powder when he retired. Some were the square Hercules cans, and a couple were the newer IMR flat cans. They had 1971 dates on them, and retail store price tags were around $3. All but one were fine. One can was bad, reddish powder like rust on top, corroded lid and smelled very acrid. It got burned out in open air.

Yep, I have some of those same cans: empty of course.
Hornady bullet box: $5.25, had a bunch of 4831 I'd paid 50 cents/lb for. Til Dad got it and used it to boost five sticks to develop a seep into a spring and pond with the one bang, or was it BOOM? 18 lbs of that stuff, $9 worth, figure what that cost me at today's prices!! After a shooting buddy died ten yrs ago I got all his stuff. Some 30,000 primers, many in primer boxes made of the old wood grooved trays. Got some over 200 boxes of 12 & 20 ga reloads in the OLD boxes. There's a market for those boxes too. Just read the new: Fur Fish n Game mag. Shows about 18 or so old collectible fishing lures. Hell of a deal, have a late neighbors tackle box with all except three of those in it on the high shelf in the shop. Need to get that down one of these days and wipe the nasties off and get this stuff listed. Might end up with enough coins to buy a good dinner or new truck maybe. Story in there: "found this old lure in the attic, was going to yard sale it for $5" collector or auctioneer ?, saw it and said he'd consign it. Damned if it didn't sell for $20,000. I could sure use a pile of coins like that!

We have got it good today when it comes to choices for reloading, bullets, powder, primers and brass. Back then you had powders that worked, but seldom optimal, unless it was a .30-06.

MP:
and an '06 is what I had too. Til Dad got his .375H&H. 4831 is/was great for that too.

Well the kicker is that not only did I use a bunch of Alcan primers (and a fair amount of Alcan powder), I also use to buy it... At a store called Alco iirc and I was just a young teen age boy. Not sure if there was an age requirement but my mother was normally there (had to drive me to town). I was always so happy to come home with primers, a big of shot, powder and wads... I was just starting to load 270 when I was 16 years old. I still have billets from back then that my dad bought in the 1960s for $3 a hindered and I think the powder was about $3 a pound!
