I use an E Caller and decoy. They are dumb compared to Coyotes. They run right in. Lightning Jack or Cottontail in distress. The 17/223 is waiting for them.

Red Fox
I use cottontail and a couple of the song bird calls. I would not call them dumb, but they will respond. Bill K

Heck I just suck on the back of my hand and call em right in while archery hunting. Called one like that the other week while laying in the goose blind in the middle of a field. Buddy killed it with 3" BB steel. He wanted to see my call. I just held out my hand...he couldn't believe it.

As was stated, Cottontail distress and I'll add juvy Red distress. Best tip is to call where they are not in the next County! Find a den and your golden.

In the past, I had better luck while calling, to use a 12ga.They do come in fast.
Spotting is where I used a centerfire. Usually a 222. I've got a 17Fireball that I've been wanting to try on a fox, BAD. Good luck ! Jim |

Oh, and when you start calling keep on it ! I've called one that I could see. Then I stopped, he lost interest. Then I kept calling, he finally committed to come in.

Distress sounds on the higher pitch side work very well (rabbit, bird).. Try to set up so the fox has some sort of cover for its approach like a fence line or edge of wooded creek, some you may have to set up for on the inside of timber.. The higher your population is for a given area a little easier to call, low numbers they can be more difficult and at times much harder than a coyote. I have had them respond from a mile away along a creek bottom and farther would be pretty tuff so move in closer to there core area. Also most red fox only live with-in a mile area... If you can see the fox you are calling to you will find some only need a little calling to bring them in and some may require a continues sounds or just played more often, each fox is different... As for best time to call I'd say all day long..
Get the right sounds out there to spark there interest and get a understanding of the areas they prefer to live in and then you will start to rack up the numbers.. |
