Default 1 in 9" or 1 in 10"???

I looked through several publications from 1971 and they all mention the 1 in 9" twist used by the then new .17 Remington. The only thing I found using 1 in 10" is the 6mm Remington...

A good quality 10" twist barrel will generally shoot the various 25 grain HP bullets fairly well. The slightly longer plastic tipped bullets.....maybe, maybe not..........

I actually bought an early first year production Model 700/17 Remington in 1972 and it had a 10" twist barrel. In late 1974/early 1975 I bought another one and it had a 9" twist barrel.

I bought, what I was told was the first Rem 700 x 17Rem that came to the UK in 1972, it was a 1-10 twist.

Default So...

Are we saying that Remington advertised 1 in 9" but sold 1 in 10"??? This adds to the .17 Remington mystery, like the stainless barrel. Some writers claim that early .17 Remington had stainless barrels. I wrote to Remington many many years ago, to find out, but no one was sure or not. They told me to test it with a magnet. If it sticks, it is not stainless. I have yet to prove or disprove that, as a magnet sticks to the stainless barrels of several currently owned firearms. I bought a 700 BDL in .17 Remington in 1973. That year they introduced the anti-bind on the bolt, and started using cut checkering, after purchasing an expensive French machine that could do it through automation, and it used 1 in 9" twist...
