Default Howa mini build

Looking hard at the B&C stock.
DIP bottom metal for sure.

The dilemma, what cartridge? (Have a 6.5G and a .222)
I don’t want to get crazy. A 20 Practical interest me. Yet something on the PPC case also has my attention, thinking 20 or 22.

I have shot the 6.5, just to taste the Koolaid. I myself really don’t know what all the hype on the 6.5 is about. I and a pile of other 6.5x55 Swede owners have known for years.
The Grendel, looked at data all over the place just to see what folks were using. I went with H335 and Sierra 100 grain HP. Got factory glass on at 25 in three shots. Went right to 100, a 1/4” left but heck with it. Went ahead and ran seven for a group, clover leaf you could cover with a nickel. I was impressed for an off the rack rig.

The .222 I need to order a rail for it. Have brass and dies.

Dunno if there is a lot to be gained with the PPC case. A lot of the old and early B.R. data was way over the top of suspected pressures. Staying in a safe and sane area may not offer enough in return for time expended. Several say there is little difference between the 204R vs 20PPC.

Simple solution! .20 VarTarg -- you'll never regret that decision.

Even simpler solution, 20/222.

For something you will probably shoot more often and enjoy more on most varmint style shooting or even from a bench. Either the 20 VT or 20-222 and be happy. Both easy to set up, find a very accurate load for while burning less powder and having a pound of powder load more rounds. Bill K

X2!

The 20-222 and 20-223 AKA 20 Practical have the advantage of not only being a simple neck down and your done, but they also feed smooth as butter.

Of the 20's mentioned so far, a 20 PPC has the most case capacity and will launch bullets the fastest with the 20VT being the smallest and slowest.

I have a 20 vt, 20 tac and a 20 br, that said I would probably lean to the 20-222 for all the reasons mentioned in previous post. my 20 vt and 20 br both feed from the magazine thanks to mike Bryant shortening and blocking the magazines on the 20 br .
the 20-222 would be efficient and based on one of the most inherently accurate case ever.
then again like picking a wife i'm not so sure I would want a forum picking her.

some light reading.

I'd decide caliber based on the OAL and the case diameter the magazine system allows.

Well I honestly am leaning towards the smaller case to a point.

These little actions, I don’t see hanging a heavy barrel out there doing this platform any good. My thoughts are a small taper (#2 Light) 20-24”. Less powder = less heat, if I were to use it on colony critters.

I do have a 17 Fireball. I run 20 grainers exclusively for the speed and splat factor. I will say I questioned it initially, but it has impressed me a lot what a small package will do.
So most all my questions, thoughts etc were answered with the little case. Not that I did not believe what I had heard and read from a lot of folks. I saw some where a fellow say he had never heard of a Vartarg that would not shoot.

20 Practical or 20-222, dies.
Just use a bushing die with the proper bushing? What are you using to bump the shoulder with?
A parent case die would leave a donut if used to bump wouldn’t it?

I have not checked or measured what the magazine will allow on OAL.
As I mentioned I have a 6.5 Grendel and a .222 for donor actions. I would have to look at the 222 and see if it is a 222/223/204 magazine. The 6.5 is a 6.5/7.62x39 magazine.

I have tossed the idea of a 17 or 20 predator around. The improved case just looks awesome for driving a heavy small bullet to high speeds.

Have had thoughts on a 20 Practical AI just to some what simplifie things, rather than go to a real radical case.

17 predator has always peaked my interest but with the 30 golds gone it's not really worth it. hadn't considered a 20 predator but like you mentioned a 20 Prac ai would be easier.

but!! going AI and shorter cases may require some tweaking for feeding so is the tuning worth the speed?

For the grendel based gun you could go the modern approach and run heavy for caliber throated for such. There's the "turbo" variants with blown out cases/sharper shoulders. 6mm and 22 cal would likely be a better fit.
