Default K Hornet question?

Hello to all,
Not sure if this has been covered, I could not find anything on it...
Can you re barrel a Sako L461 and chamber it to shoot a .22 K Hornet?
Regards,feeding and if doable!?
Thanks, Jay

Don't think that will work, but don't know for sure. A CZ 527 would probably be your best bet for a Hornet, or re-barrel to 221FB with the L461.

Believe I have read where some have taken their 22 hornets and ran a K hornet reamer in and opened them up for K hornet use. Ask your gunsmith or someone, that has done it, will chime in. Bill K

I know the L46 came in .22 Hornet, but I can't say I have seen/ heard of an L461 with .22 Hornet bolt.

G'day Wombat,

What calibre is the L461 at the moment?

The bolt face may not be compatible if you rebarrel /chamber it for a hornet.

I ain't no expert - a competent gunsmith may well be able to modify the bolt face if required.

A 461 in K Hornet would be lovely.

I stupidly sold a 461 in 222 heavy rebarrel for way to little quite a while ago.

Default 461 in hornet

I have several Sako rifles with the A1 action, which except for the bolt shroud is the same as the 461.
I seriously doubt that the 461 could be modified to handle hornet cases. The hornet head diameter is smaller and it’s rimmed. So the bolt face would need lots of changes. And if you wanted a repeater, the feed rails would need a lot of modification.
I have an A1 that was a 223 and was converted to 221 fb. It turned out great. The only mod was a new barrel chambered in 221 fb.

How does it feed the Furball?

It feeds it just fine.
If you have a Sako action in 223, 17 Rem, etc and want to go to a fireball, borrow 3-4 cartridges from someone and see how it would feed, before rebarreling.

I have a Sako A1 rebarrel in 20VarTag same case a 221FB. It feeds great. The 22 K Hornet is a rimmed cartridge with a .350 OD rim. The 223-221 isn't rimmed and is .378. The bolt face and extractor of a 223 would have to be worked for a Hornet.

Default K Hornet question

Thanks for feedback, after some homework! Bolt face and feeding is not practicable.
But I am now looking at a Sako HB L461 early model in .222R, that mite be my next varmint set up rifle.
Hope to have a look at it closer next week.
Tx. Jay
