Default 17 hornet lee crimp results

well I finally got a break and the wind died down allowing me to shoot and chronograph a load with a factory crimp applied.

12.72 gr cfeblk 25 gr hornady hp and 7 1/2 rem primers. I shot this load the other day and it shot very well. I shot four runs of 5 shots each with a lite, medium, heavy and no crimp at all.
first firing was the lite crimp at 3455 fps with an extreme spread of 33 and no standard deviation as I only had 4 loaded. group .684
next the medium crimp, 3466 fps with an ext sprd of 17and a std dev of 6, group 4 shots .398 and a fifth opened it to .793. if you want to blow up a great group just forget to set the set trigger.
heavy crimp, 3478 fps ext spd 15 std dev 6, group .765
no crimp, 3496 fps ext spd 106, sd 36 and group 1.209, the high was 3544 and the low was 3439 fps.
also tried a load of 9.8 gr lil gun, 20 gr vmax, 7 1/2 rp with lite crimp 3660 fps and group .561

I'll let you draw your own conclusions from the data.

the instructions say to turn the crimp die down to touch the shell holder, then turn it 1/2 turn, at this setting you can see the heavy crimp on the case mouth with the naked eye. by marking the die for reference the die was turned backwards 1/3rd turn for a medium crimp and them another 1/3rd for a light crimp. under magnification you can see the crimp marks.

V-good Bob - I expected no change with the sharp shouldered case. Pleasant surprise.

I wonder if having more slope of the shoulder than the AH makes a difference?

My bad. It was a 17R collet die modified to use with the 17 Hornet a fellow told me about.

Looks like I'm gonna have to buy me a factory crimp die!!! I have been struggling to get my Cooper 38 chambered in 17AH to group under and inch at 100 yds. I have tried countless loads and still nothing that tickles my fancy. This might just be what I'm missing!!!! Thanks for the post!

no clue daryl, I just knew the extreme spread was out of control. thought it might be the digital scale I was using. the intention is to repeat the loads to see if they repeat.
