Johno: Those trees are our desert junipers. They are basically a weed that grows everywhere in the western US, especially in semi-arid areas which our high desert is. The old ones (450 yrs old) are really knarley, twisted and rough. You see them in all the cowboy movies along with the ever-present sagebrush.

There are truly wonderful trout streams nearby too. See that mountain range in the background? That is the Cascade Mtns, loaded with high mountain lakes and streams. We have a major river that runs right through town with great trout fishing too...the Deschutes River.

Matt/17VLD: I know what you mean about taking your favorite .20 cal out. It was tough leaving my VT at home, and the only reason I did was that my Phoenix 221FB has QD studs on it for a bipod, that's the only reason she went out that day. I usually use my VT and my "chuck stake", but thought it'd be fun taking the Furball this time with a bipod. I missed my last shot at a HUGE chuck across a field that was very long.....should have dialed up at least one more click. Swore that I would have made the shot IF I had taken my VT instead. Good excuse for missing right?

My 20VT with the 'chuck stake':

I shoot my VT so much from the bench at rats, I'm loathe to drill the stock for QD studs, so the Phoenix will serve that purpose thank you. Again, good to have choices.

Out for a morning rock chuck before the thunderstorms moved in.
Believe the big one might match Rick's large one, would be pretty close.
Couple others of fairly good size.

Thank you for sharing! I'm hoping to do the very same thing tomorrow afternoon. There's a great little area not far from where my field assignment is - hopefully there's time after I finish up.

Rick:
Great view! More snow than ours got this winter.
Good shooting too.

That big one's "figure" looks much like mine does these days!
Dad used to say that: "spare tire around the middle".

Too much holding the chair down and not enough walking around
shooting things.

Thanks for sharing.

Default Rick I’m sorry......

I have a hard time believing you missed a big rock chuck
But I have a feeling your sight image was probably correct for the VT
My furball, was originally bought before a fellow could buy a VT from Cooper,my idea was to use it as a donor for a 20VT,it has the prettiest wood I have ever seen on a Varminter, since I now have 2 20VT’s it will stay a 221 and dang it I will shoot that gun.I bought a bunch of Lapua brass since getting it and look forward to seeing how it fits the chamber and shoots
That ‘chuck must have been pretty dang far!

Well Matt....the chuck was not as far as I wished he had been, then I'd feel better for the blatant miss. Just a big fat blunder on my part. Guess a guy has to miss once in a while to feel humble and appreciate it when we DO make a nice hit. (But he'd be a dead duck had I been on my VT!)

Know what you mean about a 221FB in the safe when there's TWO VT's. The Vartargs are just gonna get shot more, it's the way of the world. But be kind to your collection and get that Lapua brass neck sized and loaded, and take that little Furball out to the field and give her a spin. You'll remember why you brought her home in the first place.....they're just plain FUN to shoot!

And the accuracy is nothing to sneer at either. Looking forward to hearing about how she shoots; keep us posted.

ben lurkin: Any pics to share of the rock chuck outing?

Rick.. The old saying could apply to all of us, when we miss. "If you don't miss once in awhile, you are not hunting". That can be so true. Bill K
