Default Is .257 still small-caliber?

Is .257 still small caliber? If it is, I'm working on wildcat case #2-the .257 WM Magnum...it's a short action magnum-level cartridge, something that will fit in a short-action magazine box but still allow 130+ grain bullets to be seated no deeper than the neck, so the good old quarter-bore can get some BC out there.

After I get the .220 Meteorite shooting, this is next on the reloading bench.

If it's not small-enough caliber, that's OK too. It's hard to find a good wildcatting resource that isn't full of "why do you wanna do that" types but so far here's been pretty great about whatever idea you got, you go for!

Of course its ok to put up things like this, I for one reckon the 257 caliber is one of the most neglected ones going around, the more the merrier, I for one am looking forward to seeing the progress on this one, love my 25cals.

Default Is .257 still small-caliber

Have shot many a 25 cal. Especially my old 25-06, many head of game has fallen to it. So post away, and photo's are liked Bill K

Just a side thought on the .25 cal. What game have some of you taken with yours? I have hunted and harvested Dall sheep, bear, Elk and plenty of deer with my 25-06 and the Nosler partition bullet. Always worked just fine with quick kills, with proper bullet placement.

Default 25 Caliber

I have a Contender heavy barrel from MGM in 25-20. I load it with modern bullets, Sierra 70 Gr #1605. I have only been able to shoot paper so far but it is a hoot. I was sizing some of my precious 25-20 Remington brass for my 218 Bee, but fortunately Hornady started making Bee brass.

bill I always took my 25-06 with me p-dog shooting for when the winds kicked up. usually shot 75 gr hp but would go all the way to 120's if I ran out of ammo.
I shot antelope, mule deer, coyotes and whitetail with mine. owned a bunch of different rifles chambered in the 25-06 over the years and all were shooters.

had one Remington that shot 1.25" groups at 300 yards. took it out of the stock and fount the recoil lug was turned about 33*. had a gunsmith friend turn it to the proper position. you guessed it went to 5" groups at 300 yards and never shot well again. if it ain't broke don't fix it.

guns I wish I had back, colt Sauer 25-06, Weatherby Santa Barbara 257 Weatherby. my current ride is a sako l579 custom in 250 savage ai.

I hear you. Had a very old Savage 99 take down in 250 savage. Shot very well and used it deer hunting years ago. The youngest son took it with him when he grew up and left home, a year or so later he advised me it blew up, think he loaded some hot loads ( he was learning to reload) and went to far. Anyway that ended that fine old rifle. Think I got in back in around 1950. He had it in the early 80's with him in N.H. Bill K
