Hi Luke and welcome to the site.

How much H322 are you putting in ?. Flat primers area sign of pretty high pressure, dismantle any more rounds you have assembled with that load.

Todd Kindler recommends H322 as one of his two powders of choice, (the other is H335) his loads in calibers I am more familiar with seem to be very hot to me though so be careful please. He starts at 17.5 gr H322 and gets from 3667fps upwards in a 23 inch barrell, primer is a Remmy 7 1/2. Todd suggests that H322 is more temperature friendly than H335.

welcome Luke,

I used H322 with 25 gr Bergers in my 17FB. I was getting excellent accuracy with about 18 gr, but also some primer cratering with CCI BR primers. I switched to IMR 8202 and am now getting slightly faster velocity, similar accuracy and NO pressure signs.

A couple things about the small cals... vary your charges by 0.1 gr. A 0.2 or more increment can be a big mistake up around max load. Start low and work up in 0.1 gr increments, being especially careful as you approach max load. Also, primers make a big difference. I tend to use CCI or Rem 7 1/2 primers, because they have harder primer cups and don't show pressure signs as early. You didn't say what primers you're using, but I'd bet you weren't using either of these two.

If your chamber is custom, it might be fairly tight, which is a good thing...start lower and if you have a chrony, use it to help determine where your charge is, compared to book velocities. You might not need as much powder to get published velocities, another good thing.

One last thing to think about...what I've noticed with the 17FB is that the cases stretch quickly (probably because my expander ball is pulling the neck forward, coupled with a large factory chamber.) So I need to trim often. If your cases are too long for your chamber, you can pinch the neck causing pressure spikes, even with light loads. Check your case length vs. your chamber length and trim 0.010 shorter if needed. That might be your problem, since you're experiencing pressures at start loads.

Charlie

Default primers all looked same

hi
i nly loaded 15 rounds with 25gr hp with 16.5 gr h322 and rme 7 1/2 primer this looked ok , and were just used to run barrel in.

i then tried 17.0 gr of h322 with 30gr bergers and cci 400 primers,
worked up to 18.0gr in .2 step(used to loading .22hornet) at 17.4 primers started to flattern and at 18 where still looking same.

checked case head and as not expanded?

thanks for replys
luke

ps its a custom chamber and is tight, iam going to try some fed 205 not had cahnce to chrono yet. i have some aa 2460 mite try that ?

The CCI 400 (regular primer) is a thinner primer than the Rem 7.5 or CCI450 (magnum primer). CCI BR-4 is also a tougher primer.

LUKE - welcome,in my 17fb i load the 20 vmax to 19.3gns -h322 thats near max for my rifle[cooper]i think with the 30gn bergers you are probably at max @17-17.2gns-h322 for the 30 i would switch to n133 a slightly slower powder and you could get a fair bit in the case.
i use n133 for the 25berger varmint nice tiny groups plenty of destruction.
as others have stated go steady loading the 17s,only go up in.1-.2gns.
who did the rifle for you?im on ukv as well.

luke,

do you shoot that as a single shot? or can you feed out of the magazine? i've been looking for a cz 221 to build a 17 fb on, but can't seem to find one. i've seen 222 around, but i'd like to have a repeater. thanks. chris

Chris
I think there are only two sizes of bottom metal for the 527.
204,223 and 17 Rem has a longer magazine box.
221, 22 hornet and 222 is shorter. Kenny
