Melanite question
Is it better to break in a barrel before getting it treated? I have a few barrels I am thinking of getting treated by a similar process, some broken in and some unfired.

Yes, if there are any imperfections, tool marks, etc. In the throat area it's a good idea to shoot enough shots down the barrel to smooth out those areas. Once the barrel is treated, your gunsmith would need special tools to do any cutting, threading, or crown work. The companies I had treat my barrels recommended at least 40 shots before sending the barrel in for treatment.

To add: But when you send it in, it needs to be squeaky clean.
