Used to use the old nickel plated WSR, but used them up finally. Checked new unplated WSR, CCI 400, Rem 7 1/2 & Fed 205 with my load of AA1680 (warm) and the CCI 400 gave best results on target & chrono. Also, the CCI seemed to have a stronger cup than the current unplated WSR. Hope this helps, Joe

Johno, I'm a real fan of RL-7 in my FB based rifles, but you may also want to consider A2200, as it seems to work well in my Cooper M38 221FB.
Many times I've been able to source either powder locally, when I can't find one, the other is usually available. Good luck with the quest, let us know how it shakes out.

Very nice Rick, willl be happy if I can get anywhere near that. Unfortunately we don't get AA powder here, it was a long wait for CFE BLK I think it will be a good powder also but i'm going with RL -7 to start

1680 and RL7 were also my go to powders for the .221. I recently found a container of CFEBLK and made the mistake of trying it. My first shot impact was just where my RL7 loads print. I thought the next two shots either missed the paper or hit the black aiming box where I couldn't identify it. Two more shots simply enlarged the original hole. Subsequent groups confirmed a load that suits my .221 very well. Thinking the conditions were just perfect or my morning caffeine had worn off, I tried my best RL7 load which was no where as tight as the CFE loads. The next best characteristics of CFEBLK is that it is the best metering powder I have ever used through a Harrell. Every drop I measured was perfect according to my calibrated electronic scales.

I also tried the CFE BLK and found the velocities to be very good, but didn't get as good accuracy as with my AA1680 loads. I run the FB pretty warm at 3600-3650 fps with 40 V-Max. Are your CFE BLK loads in that performance arena?

The Hodgdon Data says 20.8 gr of CFE BLK gives 3,543 f/s for 40 gr Noslers. I haven't chronographed the load yet. Also using Sierra 40 Gr BK.

Well ive loaded up twenty cases 18.3 RL-7 and old stock win small rifle behind Noslers 40s. Just want to get on paper and see where its shooting. Hope monday or tuesday
Late that week i'll pick up some rem 7 1/2 primers and work with CFE BLK, hope it works well with lower loads wanting to stay more conservative with good accuracy Johno |

johno, just find the node that works best for your rifle. In my case, both rifles thrive on those higher end loads of AA1680. I haven't ever tried RL-7 in 221FB, but did use it in 20VT with great results shooting 32 gr bullets. I think the CFE BLK has lots of potential, so give it a try if you can get it.

Hey Johno:
Move the paper closer and save some ammo!
