I have two CZ 527 Varmint model 17 Hornets. One of them I had cut back to 21in. when it was in getting threaded, the other one is still 24in. There is less than 60fps difference between the two.
And as I posted over on the other forum you asked about this, if you have it cut down to 18-20 inches, whoever does the work for you will likely have to remove the barrel and so you'll need someone that has a vice. Also, I'm not sure if CZ uses a thread locker or what, but the barrels on these CZ are on there very tight. Last edited by B23; 04-16-2020 at 09:08 PM. |

I cut my CZ .17 hornet varmint to 20", velocity loss was 80 fps,
I wish I had cut it to 18", at 20 it's still a bit long with my suspressor. Changing from N120 to CFE blackout, picked up 300 fps, with just slightly less accuracy, Last edited by southernman; 04-17-2020 at 12:19 PM. Reason: Add info |

Barrel Velocity Update
I wanted to give an update after I had my barrel cut. I had the barrel on my CZ 17 Hornet varmint barrel cut from 24 inch to 18 inch and threaded 5/8 x 24 for a suppressor.
Shooting the 20 grain Hornady Superformance ammo (8 round average) with the 24 inch barrel (unsuppressed) = 3505 fps. Shooting the same lot of Superformance ammo (10 round average) with the 18 inch barrel and my suppressor on = 3465 fps. So a 6 inch reduction in length only lowered the velocity by 40 fps. I hope this helps someone else who is contemplating the same thing. I wouldn’t hesitate to cut it back to 16 inches if someone wanted to make it a little handier. I would be careful in cutting to 16 inch. Some power hungry ATF or other LE officer/ agent might just jump on a barrel on a rifle being cut at 16 inch. I think to be safe I would go 16 1/4 inch at least. |

Good catch! I don’t know how I mistyped that. You are correct, I went back and revised my post. I also shot an additional 5 rounds of factory ammo which brought my new 10 round average down to 3465.

Sounds like it worked out just great. Much handier length and virtually no velocity loss. DDi the groups get better or worse after you cut and re-crowned the barrel?

I've got a couple .17 Ackley Hornet barrels for Thompson-Center TCR-87's which are longer and one which is 18.5 inches for a suppressor. I think it only lost less than 100 fps compared to the longer barrels. But this is the thing. A loss of 100 fps with a .17 caliber 20-grain bullet hardly makes any difference because those little bullets lose velocity so fast. That is, if I remember correctly (I worked out the ballistics at one time) it seems the velocity of the bullet from the longer barrels at 200 yards becomes that same velocity at about 10 yards shorter distance. And I sight-in my .17 Hornets to be 1-inch high at 100 yards so they are less the 1-inch low at 200 yards and the trajectory was hardly changed at all. I would recommend playing around with one of Hornaday's online ballistic programs to verify what I just said.
