Question .17 Remington Fireball Factory dies

Happy New Year,

I have been looking around for a set of dies that don't overwork the brass for my .17Fireball Remington 700 SPS.

What dies out there do you all recommend?

I am looking for something that is affordable, available, and not custom, (unless any of you want to sell me a set that you no longer need).

Happy hunting.
Hutch

How do you have your current dies set up? The old screw it in until it touches the shell holder and go a touch more doesn't work. You need to screw it in until it touches, back it off a turn. Measure fired brass at the SHOULDER, run it thru and remeasure at the shoulder. Adjust the die down until it bumps the shoulder a few thousandths only. Should be good to go.

I like both Hornady and Redding dies. My 17MachIV dies are Redding.

Same here and I've been using 17FB brass in my 17MachIV.

I use Hornady and Lee, both work just fine. Use the method described in a previous post.
Screw the FL die down to touch the shell holder, then back it off close to 1/4 turn, see if the case does not give just a touch of pressure on closing your bolt. If so leave it there until you fire a few cases, then adjust your die to either just touch the shoulder or set it back no more than .002 and you should be fine.

As you see from the posts, so far Hutch, any brand of die will do the job, just adjust them correctly for your rifle and chamber and you will do just fine and enjoy that 17FB, it is a fine little cartridge.
Let us see some photos of your outings and critters taken and shots of your area, we like photo's. Bill K

For the .17FB, I use Redding type S full length resizing dies along with the competition shell holder set. Micrometer head die for bullet seating.

Default Fit and finish

My problem is I don't have any 17FB dies, just 17MIV. So, it isn't adjustment, it is which die is going to work the brass the least that is necessary to achieve enough to make the cases just barely fit.

Happy NEW YEAR guys.

I use a Redding 3 dies set, FL regular die, NK bushing die and seating die. I never use the FL die unless I get once fired brass from somewhere. All my own brass just gets neck sized. Especially in factory chambers, the neck bushing die will be helpful so you aren't squeezing the neck down more than you need to. It only needs to be necked 2 or 3 thou more than the fired measurement. I get 25 firings per case very easily and I don't anneal.

Other big plus, if you buy the extra bushings you can use it to neck size your 221 FB brass too.
