Default Primers.

Primers are a hot topic today mainly because there are very few available. Alot of people have a good selection for lg, sm, pistol, rifle, and the magnum primers for each. Also there has been a lot of talk if you can interchange from one to another. I have never tried this or condone it unless I had alot of personal experience with doing so. That's just me but I have read where people have done it and with good results and I really don't see why it wouldn't work My question is has anyone ever tried using one in another like small pistol to small rifle or maybe small pistol mag primer in small rifle case?

I've heard of people using pistol primers in 17 and 22 Hornet.

I use small pistol primers in the 22 Hornet and large pistol primers in cast bullet rifle loads.

As far as safety goes, I am pretty sure you can substitute small rifle primers for small pistol primers. In fact, Freedom Arms suggests (requires?) the use of Rem 7 1/2 BR primers in the 454 Casull.

You might have an issue with inadequate hammer strike force with some pistols. I would NOT suggest using small pistol primers in higher intensity rifle cartridges.

I believe there is a difference in the dimensions of large pistol and large rifle primers.

I tried pistol primer in the .17AH = cratered/disc'd badly, almost pierced.
They worked fine in my .22 Hornet with 40gr. at 3,340fps to 3,357fps depending on the bullet used.
They also gave the best accuracy in that first CZ, whereas the second one did not care what primer was used.

I should have added that I'm using 2400 as the powder charge, shot literally thousands of cast rounds with no problems..........

I've been using CCI sr's in just about all my small primered
revolver ammo for quite a few years. Ran out of sp's.

I have never found there's a difference in my use. Even for
light loads of Red Dot in '38 cast plinker loads.

IF you run out and can't get what you 'should have', try it
yourself and see the results.

Back in '11 driving by PVI I stopped with the intention of buying
25,000 of each size: pistol and rifle's. Guess what I found?

"sorry sir, the only CCI primers we have in stock is 20,000 SmR's."
"I'll take 'em all, along with about 8 or 9 jugs of various powders".

Instead of leaving at least $3000 with them, I 'only' left about $900.

I've tried to order the others many times, never in stock.

Bob the foxhunter saw that load of goodies I had.

Here's some other info you may wish for sometime if you drive by there.
I forget the name of the road they're on about ten miles E of town. Turn south about 1/4 mile to a broken down metal gate and mail box that's 40 years past due for replacement. Not a sign anywhere, not even on the mail box. About a 1/4 mile west down a dirt road there's a tan metal building without any signs, not even on the door. Just open it and walk in. Counter did have a Dillon press on it. I stood there at least two minutes without anyone saying a word. I finally asked: "is this PVI?" 'voice way in the back' "yes it is, are you here for a pick up order" "no, just stopped in as I've been a longtime customer and want to buy a supply of primers and powder". I then walked back to her desk and placed the order. She phoned the warehouse and a friendly young guy brought the order on a cart and helped me carry it out to the car.
Needless to say I was very disappointed in it all. Hope your visit is much better. When I've placed order's, at times I buy for several others to save shipping and hazmat charges. I've had up to seven cases of 6 jugs each on my porch and two more full of primers. UPS driver rolled his eye's over it.
