Default .17 Remington is dead

At least as a factory loaded offering. LGS had 5 boxes of 20 gr. Rem. Ammo. There were 14 different loads/ brands of .204 Ruger next in line on the shelf. Gun rack had 4 .204's, no .17's. In fact I can't recall the last time they had a 17 Remington on the wall.

I realize that this is just one shop, but I think it is indicative of current state.

Default 17 Reminton is dead

Maybe it was not a cartridge chambered by a lot of factories, but with the amount of barrel makers that chamber barrels for it, I don't believe the 17 Remington is dead, a lot of folks are shooting and building them. Also the 17 Fire ball is very popular. Bill K

Default Taps for the 17 Rem

17 Fireball or 17-222, would be my choice if I ever wanted to go below my 19-223, 20 Vartarg or 20 Duster.
I'm not really sure what a 17 Rem can do that any of the above can't and they have the upward versatility. I love having options.
But, bottom line: Whatever turns the FUN crank and there are no wrong answers. Ain't the shooting life grand?!!

But I use my 204s more these days.

I will have probably have to scour up a few more 25HPs to retain, and have both 20gr and 25gr. I have 17 Rem and 17MachIV, both in L461s with 1:10 twist.

I kinda think the 17 Remington was the first factory 17 centerfire of any real note. I am not sure why it was not a wildcat 17/223, but suspect some perceived marketing leverage figured in all of that decision making.

Over the years, the 17 cal in centerfire has had some short lives. I suspect the 17 hornet will meet the same fate, hope not, but there has been a trend noticed. The Ackley and K hornets trudge on.

The 17 Remington is what it is. Fairly speedy, feeds well in bolt guns, and some factory ammo made available. I have always liked it in any configuration of rifle, walking to heavy. Kinda powder hungry, but I am not a super high volume shooter............barrel wear, who cares, the couch rolls around on custom barrel blanks..........mostly in 10 twist, just tenure there.

The lack of factory ammo never has been a biggie for me, always buy grocery sacks full of brass and older bullets; with powder from Dexter's Garage.

Feeding in a bolt gun is one of the 17 remington's nice features to me, but with that said, I do have a No.1 with a 5.5 Shilen on it in 17 remington. Probably oughta make up a 17 remington on a Sako single shot action; the old AAA wood is there somewhere, but here I go dreaming again.......

I reckon most of us shoot rifles in calibers that factory ammo tends to be a moot point, either none for years or every 10 years a run is made. I think we probably will see more of discontinuing some ammo/calbers in the coming times, does not fit in the AR15 what good is it?.......... Guess I will hold onto my ole dogs.

Oh, it's alive and kicking with me. I've got an AI sako and a Matt Salm AR-17 w/ 18" Lothar Walther bbl. I love this caliber aka needle-gun. At one time I had a Rem 700 VSS. That one went down the road to KS, IIRC.
My Sako has seen many rounds. It will need a visit to Gre-tan rifles eventually.
