Yep, from my training and experience they were not properly glued the first time.
I agree with Bill, I would expect to pay about $100. |

I would say at least $150. I can't believe how crappy of a job most guys do when packing stuff up to ship. It's appalling.

Did you send pics to the seller and did you get a reduced price?

What's really appalling in this scenario is how some supposedly professional (?) folks apparently attach grip caps and fore end tips in such an amateurish and poorly executed fashion.
What BCB said, pretty shoddy work for sure on a nice rifle. Tom |

The barrel is stamped C. Grossman, who I assume was the gunsmith, My best guess is that work was done circa early 1970's. I can't find any details on the gunsmith. I'll improve the stock support of forearm, and steam out some minor dents.
The shaping of the thumhole stock is both elegant and extremely comfortable. I would use this as pattern for another mini-mauser build in a heart beat. |

I'm sending you a pm with two guys that are qualified g/smith's. One in CO other in Iowa. Even though you can most likely do the repair as it should have been done originally. Don't do it. hire it done and bill the guy, cover thy arse that way. So he won't be coming back at you for over charging etc. Sure a beautiful hunk of wood.

Stock repairs
I agree with most of the comments. Being a wood worker you can handle those minor repairs to the caps. Bundling it up and shipping it to someone else, I don't think I would. Most stock guys will use 2 wood dowels and the proper type of adhesive. Did the stock itself receive damage, you mentioned steaming out dents?
I would ding someone 150.00, 100.00 for the work and 25.00 each way for shipping. Now if it has to be refinished because of the sellers lousy packing? I don't know anyone that would strip a stock, sand it down for prep, steam out all the handling dings and reapply a nice finish for less than 200.00 unless they like selling their work for 5.00 bux an hour. If you send that stock to a pro, tell him to repair it correctly, totally restore the stock, because that's what your really doing, pack it correctly, insure it and ship it back? You'll be north of 400.00, a part time Hobbie stock guy will still nick you for 300.00 or so, unless he's charging 5.00/hour. I would bet that's a Fajen based on the thumbhole pattern and the caps, got a couple myself that are installed on Sakos. If so that stock is probably 25 to 30yrs old and you can blame the installation issues on the manufacturer, poor packaging that's the seller. Last edited by Chuck Miller; 02-18-2018 at 02:51 PM. |

Based on experience, good luck with UPS. Be glad the gun didn't get stolen by their organized thieves and settle with the seller.
