Default Remington 6 1/2 srp.

Does anyone use these in their 221/222/223 etc?

Is there a point of pressure that is acceptable? Working with reduced trailboss loads seem fine as they look perfect after firing, just wondering if you load a standard load if the added pressure will create craters etc?

I hate them and do not use them. My experience was I had been using WSR in my other 22 Hornets. I got a new rifle, a Cooper M38 in 22 Hornet and tried the Rem 6.5. Same load as I had been using except the primer. The first two rounds pierced primers, pitting the bolt face. The cups are definitely weaker than other rifle primers.

Default Primers

I use Rem 7.5 in those cartridges. In the 22 hornet, Fed SP primers.

The link below still seems to be relevant.

Go to the "Informative Articles" tab on the left. Click on it and scroll down and read the article titled "Primers and Pressure".

Remington 6 1/2 primers are for low pressure cartridges only such as the 22 Hornet. Using them in high pressure cartridges such as the 222, 223, etc. they will pierce or leak around the perimeter causing pitting on the bolt-face.

At one time they were marked as only to be used in low pressure cartridges but appartently not so anymore.

Warning: Remington does not recommend use of the 6-1/2 Small Rifle primer for use in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 204 Ruger, 17 Remington Fireball. Use the 7-1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest primer in these cartridges. The 6-1/2 Small Rifle primer is primarily designed for use in the 22 Hornet.

Thanks.

BCB, the chart tells all, thank you. Guess if I load the .221 fb at .22 hornet pressure I will get away with the remington 6 1/2. Guess I'll pick up some CCI 450's or Rem, 7 1/2's.

FWIW I forget his name (was it Kevin Harrington) but anyone who has ever spoke with the guy who did lots of 17&22 squirrel load development swore by the Rem 6-1/2 and told me not to waste time trying another primer because the 6-1/2s are superior in that round. I had to see for myself and didn’t notice a huge difference in my rifle?

Well I can't see why I can't use them for a more mild load in the 17 Hornet or .221 Fireball. I guess I should just load a few and see. Keep the .221 @ around 2500 fps. Or maybe use Quickloads to see .22 hornet max pressures and go from that.

Let me be clear Remington 6.5 suck. Not so sure I would trust them even in a pistol.
