Default knockin the dust off the .17 Rem

So I usually carry my big stick 17/204 when I call coyotes but every now and then I get a hankerin for something with a little less kick. As was the case a couple weekends ago when I decided to brush the dust off the .17 Rem. Had a pretty good day with 5 coyotes in the truck and one mangy sucker left behind.

So after such a fine showing for the .17 Rem I decided to take her out again this morning for a quick day. I knew it was going to be a short day because the wind was forecast to blow hard by or before noon. So got started at first light but it wasn't until my 2nd stand that I managed to call in a "two of a kind" pair. Got both males sucked in to some good ol fashioned fight sounds. Killed #1 at 100 yards and #2 at 166.

On the very next stand I got two more quick takers using good ol fashion rabbit. #1 was charging hard and #2 hung back to survey the action. Almost didn't get #1 stopped but finally at about 40 yards she put it in park and I hit her but she spun and headed out on a death sprint. Only made it about 30 yards before piling up. Her mate back on the hill must've thought she had she rolled the rabbit because he then came charging right on in to her and that's where I planted him.

I made two more stands before the wind sent me packin for the house. As I was tootling on down the road I spotted a nasty mangy coyote standing not 100 yards off the highway. A closer look revealed a 2nd coyote laying nearby. Just so happens they were on a ranch that I can hunt so I turned around and went back to the ranchers house not 1/4 mile back down the road. Talked to him and he told me to "go get em". With the wind and a deep ditch that brought me to within 75 yards of them it was an easy stalk. As I came up out of the ditch I couldn't see them so I got set up on my shooting sticks and did a couple mouth howls. That got #1 to stand up I and I quickly put her down. Mr. mangy took note and headed for the hills but didn't take long for my next bullet to catch up and roll him up as well. Both were old coyotes according to their badly worn teeth and the female only had 3 legs.
Got back and talked to the rancher and as it turns out he told me that he had shot a leg off of one just a couple years ago. Our guess is that it was the female I shot today.
Had to leave the last two lay as neither had a good coat.

Now that's how it's done! Nice work TR!

What bullet are you using in the 17 Rem? What's your barrel length?

Great post

Rifle is the Remington BDL with the 24" barrel. I always shoot a 25 grain bullet of some flavor or another. Two weeks ago I was using Nagels and today I was using up some factory Remington ammo. that I need to get used up. Both my reloads and these factory ammo shoot to same POI.
I also have a bunch of loaded rounds with the Hornady 25 gr. HP's that I use on occasion that also shoot to same POI. This rifle likes to shoot 25 grain bullets no matter who the maker is and it seems like each bullet performs to about the same level. They all kill coyotes pretty well.

Hey Tim:
One thing for sure, you won't run out of coyotes up there in your area.

Do you get any exits with those bullets?

Factory ammo? Ahh, come on! Didn't know anyone on Saubier shot
factory ammo.

You get much snow this season? Couple 1"-2" and couple days ago we
had 5". Mighty dry down here.

How many have you killed this year?
