Default Hardly scientific but worth further study...

I tried IMR 4007 SSC in my 22-250 Savage 12FV and found that after 12 shots near max shooting at a normal pace the barrel temps increased by 31 degrees F on a 85 degree day. Past experience is the barrel is much hotter using H380 or IMR 3031. It was so much cooler I grabbed the thermometer to check it. This reading was taken about 2 minutes after the last shot fired.

Default "cool" powder ?

My CZ527 Varmint factory rifle is 9 years old and has always been loaded with H4895, REM brass, CCI BR4 and 25gr Berger Target bullets that shoot 1/4 inch @ 100 yards @ 4200 fps.

Special memories include a red fox suntanning 12 inches from his burrow and shot placement in the temple @ 300 yards resulting in instant death and securing him from scurrying back into the burrow. Another memory is a adult male coyote shot @ 450 yards in the heart area resulting in instant death.

I contribute my barrel longevity to NOT being a high volume shooter, regular barrel maintenance and having a varmint barrel contour.

I wouldn't classify the 17REM as a barrel burner nor any of the popular powders as contributing to short barrel life.
It's all about the "user" and the "care" of your tools.

The wide selection of powder recommendations listed by members adds credibility to how accurate, reliable and flexible the 17REM is noted.
