Default US SocSec screw up

Since there's so many of us old codgers on here in the US.
The majority of us are getting SocSec income.

Just want to advise everyone drawing a SocSec check to verify the
new amount for 2019 is correct.

We're supposed to get 2.8% COLA increase. That's: $2.80 per $100 of
our 2018 checks.

Noticed mine is figured wrong by $33 (short of course).

They will NOT correct this unless YOU notify them in writing.

I know there's several million of us drawing this, if they did the same
thing on everyone else's as mine they could almost balance the budget!
Or mine at least!!

Hey, George.......... My notice came in the mail this afternoon and your post caused me to look.

I took my new full monthly Social Security benefit before any deductions and subtracted the previous year's full monthly benefit before any deductions from it. I then divided that difference between those two amounts by the previous year's full monthly benefit before any deductions and I came up with an increase of 2.80047104% for my increase.

Default Social security change

What was the effective date for the change? I assumed it was for January benefits.

Gary: It starts Jan's check. Mine comes on the 3rd.

Hal: This form showed NO changes to anything except increased check amount.

Went up $8. Heading said it would increase 2.8%.

Figure an increase of $2.80 per hundred of what 2018's checks were for.

Mine should have gone up $33 instead of the $8.

All I'm trying to say is: Verify on YOURS the increase is correct.
IF not, write SS and point it out. They will NOT correct it unless you write.

Simple as can be guys.

I have no idea what might have gone wrong with your figures, George. If you're in doubt, I agree; call them to get it resolved in your mind.

I just wanted to clarify for anyone who might be wondering that any changes were based on the gross monthly amount for 2018 versus the gross monthly amount for 2019. It is not a difference in the net check dollar amount that an individual receives each month. The difference between those two gross monthly amounts divided by the 2018 gross monthly amount number should represent an approximate 2.80% cost of living increase in the gross from 2018 to 2019.

Since it was asked, my medicare went up $1.50 per month. I have no idea if this was an across the board increase for everyone or not, but it does not figure into the 2.80% increase to the gross which is what SS is referencing in their information.
