cmatera, are you thinking about building/rebarreling something or purchasing a new factory 204 from a gun store?
It's not secret I am always in favor of building from scratch or rebarreling something I already have and using a top quality custom barrel, over a factory gun. I don't know if you reload or not, but if you do and you'll be going the custom barrel route, it's worth mentioning, you may want to consider the 20-223 AKA 20 Practical, but if you're going to be shooting all factory ammo, then just buying a nice 204 off the shelf will suit your needs. |

The Savage Predator is also threaded. The Berger 55 is no longer, so 50 grains is the heaviest out "now" . Do you shoot where there is high volume shooting? The light profile barrels will get warmed up pretty quickly. I have a 1-10 .204 and a 1-11 .20P and either shoot 39-40 grain bullets very well. Bullberry started cutting and the 20" barrel is less than 80 fps drop in velocity from a 24" barrel.

Yes the Ruger American is factory threaded, but 22" long and 12 twisted. The Howa 1500 is not threaded and 12 twisted. The TC Compass is 10 twisted but not threaded. I'm not sure I'll be happy with the accuracy in the price range the above rifles are in.

So it looks like a 204 Howa mini would be an "old" one at this point. The Howa minis do seem to have a good reputation for accuracy in other calibers, and LSI offers a sub-MOA guarantee on them. My mini in 223 shot pretty well, then I took the barrel off, cut 2" off and re-chambered it in 22 Spitwad and it still shoots ok. I don't shoot paper much but here is a ~0.5MOA 200 yard group off a bipod testing 40gr Zmax bullets: |
