Default .17 cal bullets - what do you want?

So, I've gotten back to the point that we can begin making bullets again. The plan right now is to focus on the 35-37g BT and the light 15-17g range. What else are you fine folks wanting to shoot?

I would like a soft point 20-25gr bullet for dispatching raccoons and other small critters where I need head shots to save pelts. The HP and ballistic tips make a mess.

A 30gr BT with a very small hollow Point, a clone of the good old Berger 30gr Match BT. Larry

Thumbs up Ron.......

If you make a 37gr. VLD-ish bullet, that will not blow-up at 3800fps in a 6.0" twist barrel.......many 17 shooters will beat a path to your door.

I'd like to see some of both. 35-37 BT that will work in a 9 twist and 15-17 for a 9 or 10 twist. 9 twist is as fast as I own.

Thats a tough act to follow!

Using a stability calculator for a 35 grain bullet it has to be shorter than .65" to stabilise from a 1:9" twist (at @3000fps or faster!).

Berger 30grains bullets are/was .637" and their 37gr was .855".
So squeezing that bullet .2" in length and only loose 2 grains will make it look like a pug and render the need for a boattail somewhat moot.

I'm with him for the same reasons.

Agreed. I'd love to have a heavy VLD for my 17BR

Genco used to make a lead tipped 25gr. I would also like to see a long for weight bullet with something like an aluminum core or even a Teflon core, I know aluminum core bullets are made, so it should be something that could be done. If you look at the BC data you will see that longer light flat base bullets are much better than even a shorter heavy BT with a ballistic tip. So something like a bullet with the length of a 30gr bullet weighing 20gr. This would also cause great happiness in the lead free areas. Larry
