17 Squirrel build help!!!
Want to build a .17 Squirrel to shoot ptarmigan and grouse, First post first wildcat. Been reloading for 10 years, got some questions for you fine folks out there. Im in bush Alaska so I need a Gunsmith somewhere? Don't really matter how far away, I called a guy in Anchorage and he never heard of a squirrel haha. Also seems I have a few actions to choose from any suggestions? I'm kinda a Ruger guy so the 77/22 is high on my list, Will the 6 round magazine feed? What are my Magazine fed options?
Please and Thank you Jeff |

What made you settle on the 17 squirrel? With the Mk2 the HMR and the 17hh out, it seems like all needs (except for a custom wildcat) could be met without custom gunsmithing and case forming. Burt

Squirrel
That's what I was going to say. Thanks for beating me to it bburrell! 17 HMR all the way for me and 20gr XTP for the bird hunt! Not that the Hmr is any better I just like it

Gets cold and lonely up here at night, Playing with a new cartridge would help pass the time. Had my heart set on a .17HH but want to play around with decreased velocity, I think the smaller case of the squirrel is better suited? Tom Moore's dinner load, 25gr bullet doing 2550fps is what really caught my eye, I should be talking to some .17HH guys about a 2500fps load. Jeff

Ok Just found an article https://gunsmagazine.com/speedy-efficient/
This fellow takes the .17HH down to HM2 velocity 2000fps or so and still shoots sub moa, I really wanted a wildcat to show the friends but the .17HH seems the way to go? The squirrel is just cool though, I love the picture with it next the the quarter cracks me up. |

Read that one! Good article. You can down load the 17 Hornet no problem.

You can always buy a CZ527 in 17HH and load down with trailboss. I hunt grey squirrel with Hornady 25gr hp bullets @ 930fps... I thought about the 22mink/squirrel and the 17 squirrel only to realize the 17HH and 221 fireball does it for me.
That 17 squirrel sure does look neat though The Ruger 77/22 has that 2 piece bolt thing going on, personally I'd have a hard look at the CZ527, much nicer built rifle.. |

Hornet
Go to the you tube channel . Look for Cavedweller, he's got both CZ-old ugly! And the beautiful Ruger 17 Hornet! He does a lot of shooting with them. Good stuff! You'll have feeding problems with the CZ!

There will be more feeding issues with the 77/22.
