Just use a bushing die with the proper bushing? What are you using to bump the shoulder with?

For my 20-222, I'm using Redding 222 FL bushing dies as well as I have a Redding bushing neck sizing only die. I use a Redding 222 Competition seating die to seat my bullets.

I always prefer to use Lapua brass when available so I'm necking down Lapua 222 brass in one pass for my 20-222 and it's a no turn neck diameter throat. I run 1 thou neck tension. Off the top of my head I don't recall the bushing size but I'd be happy to go look if you'd like to know.

Current load is a 40gr Berger with 22.5gr H322 and a 205M. It's a fairly mild load, probably two grains under max, but it still launches them in the mid 3600's and puts them into some pretty tiny little groups.

My 20-222 is built on a trued Rem 700 with a Hart #4 contour 11tw finished at 26 inches, but I think I'm going to have it chopped back to 24 inches when I have it threaded to shoot suppressed.

I originally had planned to have a 20-221 built, even bought the dies for it, but I knew I wanted something that would feed smooth and reliable from either a standard Rem BDL setup or a HS Prec detachable mag setup so I changed gears and went with the 20-222 instead and it feeds smooth as silk through the HS Prec detachable mag system I ended up going with.

These little actions, I don’t see hanging a heavy barrel out there doing this platform any good. My thoughts are a small taper (#2 Light) 20-24”. Less powder = less heat, if I were to use it on colony critters.

Re these two items, my 20/222 barrel is a number 4 profile from Pacnor, 1-11 twist 24 inches they chambered and threaded for me, then sent if over here for final fitting here. I find it is an ideal length/weight for the type of shooting I do with the rifle, spotlighting foxes and other critters out of the ute window using a Big Iron door rest I modified.

For dies I use a Redding 222 neck bushing die with a .230 bush, this gives me 4 thou tension, my throat is .234. If I ever have to full length size, which I havent had to do with over 15 shots per case so far, I have a Redding body die in 222. I have never had any problems with lengthening, thickening necks, or donuts, just a straight neck down of Lapua Match 222 brass and go shoot em. I only use 32gn Hornady Zmax, AR2207 powder and Rem 7 1/2 primers, speed is a tad over 3900 fps, I am very happy with this set up and load.

I like the #6 20" barrel on my .222. It feels really nice. FYI, I tried the Ebay trigger springs from a Aussie guy for around $15. You still have a 2 stage but with a much nicer pull. I ordered the 1#. It ended up around 1 1/4#. The only negative is if you cycle the bolt too hard, it causes the trigger to bind that shot. For the $$ compared to a aftermarket trigger it's a great buy.

I’ve messed with quite a few of the Howa Mini Rifles and I don’t think you’ll have any feeding issues with a shorter case due to the center feed of the magazine. I’ve barreled them in 6mm Grendel/243 LBC, 22 Grendel, and just did a 17 Remington. I have a 20 Grendel reamer on order with JGS for the next one. I kept factory stocks and very light barrel profiles finished at 21-22”. They all made great handling rifles and sub MOA. The 17 Rem was just a green mountain blank I contoured down, and the others were Heym blanks from Numrich and they were VERY good quality hammer forged blanks with phenomenal finish in the bores.

Do any of you Howa guys know if they plan to make the mini action in a Hornet? Seems like it would be a good action for a modern Hornet.

I would be shocked if they did. Not much action in the Hornet market, which is kind of sad. Most of us that actually shoot them, love them.

For anything based off of the Hornet case, we are very limited on what actions will work.

Besides the CZ 527, Ruger, and Savage model 25, is there anything else that works for a 22/17 Hornet build???

Sako L46, Sako M78. I would not say either are project guns.

Looks like Chiappa imports a mini sharps in the 17 hornady hornet
