Default 17 Max or 17 Super Max

Who shoots these? How many different versions are there? How similar to the 17Jet?
What velocities can be achieved safely? I was looking at a case Aaron A
gave me and the little wheels started to move again.
What ever happened to Dennis Hrusosky of HeBee fame, did'nt he
have something to do with these cartridges?TIA
Matt

Hello Matt. I don't shoot them, but here's a few 17s using the 357 Maximum as its parent case:

there's a 17 Jet version
17 Max. 30°
17 Max. 40°
17 Super Max
17 Baker Maximum
17 Wenzl Special
17 F.W. Howell

I think the Max brass is very hard to come by right now. I've been looking for a couple hundred pieces and there seems to be none around. Something else to consider.

When they run the next batch just buy 10 bags and you'll be set for a while. I got mine from cabelas probably should have took another 10 but it had to be the worst brass ever. If you do a search you'll find pictures I took of the flash holes

Default 357 Max

According to Mike Bellm's web site Remington will make a run of 357 Max brass in May, 2014. Might want to check on this if you are looking for Max brass.

I'd do the jet with a long neck. I was able to get 4200fps with a 20Vmax. Not much need for any more Once I got the case forming steps down I didn't loose any cases. The big thing was to anneal BEFORE starting, even with brand new brass.

OH, by the way your PPC bolt should be able to use the .357 cases.

Aaron

Matt, here is a picture for ya. IMHO the Jet is awesome but if I was planning on shooting a 25 gr V-max I would go with the 17 WS (nothing but a 17 Jet run in deep, thinking another .125” maybe?? Nothing to do with the name just like the way it turned out, I give Ray H and Fred and Bullberry all the credit. Not sure but I think it’s almost a ballistic twin of one of the dearest 17s I own, the 17 Jav Imp but with a rim.

The rimmed 17 Mach IV is not bad either but I would look at making a longer neck on it… I accidently forgot to include it in the photo shoot.

Below are some links incase you have not seen them.

L-R 17 Jav Imp (just for rimless comparison) 17-357 Max (Bill West), 17 WS 17 Jet (long Neck) and a 17 Killer Bee (Dan C 17-218 Bee design).

17-357 Max

There’s something special about the 17 Wenzl Special

The 17 Wenzl Special ~

Can’t go wrong with any of em though, I enjoy the 17KB just as much
