Not by Western standards. Maybe in the east, the way they count every point Bill K

Why are the brow tines not counted for a 4pt? Length?

I'm guessing that brow tines aren't counted as points because they aren't points. They're brow tines. Points is points. Brow tines is brow tines.

I remember when I first started hearing eastern counts as a kid, people would talk about an 8 pointer and I'd be picturing in my mind what they would actually call a 18 pointer .

That's what I figured. Here in Michigan, if it's an inch long, it's a point. Interesting how things are different...

Same here in Illinois - brow tines count if they are one inch long. In my book it is an eight pointer!

Another difference this brings up...

Use of the words "point" vs. "pointer".

I never heard anyone call a deer a "pointer" until at least in my teens, maybe my 20's. And I've still never heard anyone around here ever call a deer a "pointer".

It's always "point". As in "I only saw one 4 point". Never a "4 pointer".

These days all the guys I know who are serious about hunting mule deer (which I really am not very serious about it...), actually might call that buck in the picture a "3x3". We see an awful lot of deer these days with uneven points, so it helps be more accurate and descriptive to say they saw a 4x4 or a 3x4, or like one I saw a couple weeks ago a 9x11. Although, for the sake of keeping things short, if a guy says he saw a 4 point, you can figure it must have been a 4x4 else he'd have clarified. They still never count the brow tines, but if the buck has good ones, they'll usually mention it, as in "saw a real nice 5 point with long hooked brow tines" (that would be a 12 pointer to you guys back east).

I'm from the lower part of Michigan, but that is a classic Yooper song this time of year. I remember hearing that when I was fairly young.
