Question for the wise.
Fellas,
Due to the primer shortage I can not find any small magnum pistol primers, my question is is it safe to use small rifle primers in place of small magnum pistol primers? Concerning the 327 Federal Magnum, using either CFE Pistol or IMR Target would it be foolish to try using Remington 6 1/2 small rifle primers? I do use the rem 6 1/2 primers with trailboss and 60gr xtps for powder puff loads out of a Henry carbine rifle with no issues. Just not sure if using powders creating higher pressures would create problems or be unsafe? This is strictly for rifle loads. Thx guys |

Here's a table I stole from James Calhoon's site. Based on that, and other's experience with piercing 6.5's in rfles, I would say NO, DO NOT try 6 1/2's They have a relatively thin cup. You could try any of the others with thicker cups and be fine though.

Im more interested in where you found some .32 caliber bullets my .327 Fed mag and .32 H & R are hungry and i can't seem to feed them.

I don't think cup thickness is going to be much of an issue in pistols but I would try to match the pressure and ignition characteristics..

The 327 Fed is a pistol round. Hodgdon lists the max load around 43kspi, which is nearly identical to the .22 Hornet, which the 6 1/2 primer is used. I don't see why it would not work fine if you stick with existing load data.

Hodgdon lists CFE pistol max load 85gr xtp 41,200 psi
IMR target max load 40,600 psi With 100gr xtp they list IMR 4227 max load @ 30,000 psi CFE pistol max load @ 42,300psi IMR target max load @ 41,600 psi So as Moorepower states these are the same pressures as a 22 hornet give or take. other than pierced primers do yall think there is any danger in trying? I can always try IMR4227 which gives the lowest pressure of the 3 powders. |

NO. DO NOT TRY IT.
My understanding is the primer pockets of rifle and pistol cartridges are of different depths and so is the dimension of the primer. Check with SAAMI or Starline about this. For example, I think some brass for .460 S&W and .500 S&W as well as others specify 'brass marked in this manner is for rifle primers' and likewise a warning for pistol primers. |

I believe the small pistol and rifle are the same depth. The larege pistol and rifle require different tools to uniform pocket due to the difference in height.

Minimum and maximum dimensions of primer pockets
Here is a table of the minimum and maximum primer pocket and primer dimensions. Surprisingly this data isn't too easy to find, so I have done the research for you. Dimensions in inches. Primer pocket dimensions and tolerances Pocket Type Depth Min Depth Max Diameter Min Diameter Max Small Rifle/Pistol 0.1170 0.1230 0.1730 0.1745 Large Rifle 0.1250 0.1320 0.2085 0.2100 Large Pistol 0.1170 0.1230 0.2085 0.2100 Primer dimensions and tolerances Primer Type Height Min Height Max Diameter Min Diameter Max Small Rifle/Pistol 0.1150 0.1260 0.1745 0.1765 Large Rifle 0.1230 0.1360 0.2105 0.2130 Large Pistol 0.1150 0.1260 0.2100 0.2120 It's interesting to note that while small pistol and small rifle primers are exactly the same size, the same is not true of large pistol vs large rifle. I have heard of people substituting small pistol and small rifle primers during desperate times, but one should always be careful of pressure increases and the potential for pierced primers if one resorts to such extreme measures. It's always best to use components as they were intended. Another notable fact is the overlap in tolerances. The largest primer is taller than the shallowest pocket, and the loosest in-spec pocket is the same size as the smallest in-spec primer. It's for these reasons that we sometimes run into so much frustration with certain brands of brass and primers. |

Thx guys!
I do use the remington 6 1/2 with trailboss and 60 xtps with zero issues and they do fit perfect in the pocket for what its worth. Maybe if everyone didn't buy all the damn primers off the face of the earth I'd be able to just do it by the book which is what I'd rather do. PS- Thank You Johnly for the dimensions and effort! |
