I have a HK P7M8, they have fluted chambers. When picking up brass I can always tell which is mine by the funny looking lines it puts in the brass.

Me too. Never had any issues reloading it either, using my Dillon carbide pistol dies. Same thing with the brass from the HK rifles, whether 5.56 or 7.62.

For me, brass of known origin, fluted ot unfluted, is a far different breed of cat from brass of unknown origin as to what it was shot in, how was it loaded,, how many times has it been shot, etc., etc..

I even fired some fluted brass in my old SP-1 that I was given from people that I knew and trusted back in the days of those 1980's combat rifle matches. Oh, the horror... There is no doubt that fluted brass can be reloaded as it was commonly done back in the 1980's when it was far more prevalent than today.

That said, I still will not pick up rifle or pistol brass of unknown origin in any observable condition when I can buy new brass at reasonable prices like I've done for years. It's maybe not for everyone, but it has kept my "worry level" much lower where I've never spent considerable time sorting out other peoples' problems just because the price was right.

That's just me, and I certainly don't expect everyone to think the same........

key words, can buy and reasonable, lately it's like neither exist. local shop wants new prices for used brass and new doesn't exist in some calibers, same with powder and primers. i don't think 128.50 for 1000 primers is reasonable neither is 44.00 for a pound of powder. but as the saying goes in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

George as to "Shucks Bob you should be the one giving advice" yes i probably knew the answer, that's why i bought the small base dies from BillK but look at the great conversation that came from my question. too many lurker and not enough post. yes i am calling out the lurker here to keep the forum from fizzling away

foxhunter, for years I've operated on the 6-P Principle: Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Anyone who didn't see this current component/ammo shortage crisis coming wasn't paying attention. This is at least my 3rd rodeo on the availability of components and loaded ammo, so I've learned to plan ahead for possible future needs when supplies are abundant and low priced. I've never bought in quantities even approaching hoarder quantities, and I've never stood in line for anything. But I did plan for the future based on previous political situations. History repeats itself.

Have I bought any 223 brass recently? No. I haven't even tried for maybe 4 years. In that same 4 years I have however given away components and ammo where a real need existed.

This forum is nothing like it was even 5 years ago in terms of content or traffic, and like many other chat forums of all kinds, traffic has slowed considerably. If you were here in 2000, its hardly recognizable in comparison. Still, a few of us old idiots hang on.......

Agreed on the 6P's philosophy. I have decent stocks of important components, powders, bullets, primers and brass. I do keep the brass for my bolt rifles segregated to the rifle, and only reload that brass for that rifle. I have found each rifle is an individual animal and the chambers all vary - sometimes significantly between rifles of the same nominal caliber - especially for old calibers like the 22 Hornet. That changes only for my ARs that are used for just blasting ammo using 55gr FMJ bullets, typically in carbines, and that ammo is always full length resized and can be used in all of them.

I use to use social media type groups but found the culture toxic On social media generally so I canned social media totally and now keep connected through WWW forums only.

Default I'm with you when you're right...

BCB, I've also never understood the allure of picking up/obtaining unknown brass and using it for reloads. If I don't know the number for times and way brass has been loaded or what kind of chamber it was in, I don't want anything to do with it.
