Default anyone else shooing 17 gr vmax bullets

i shoot them for fox and jacks in my 17 viper (4134 fps) and 17 velociraptor (3875 fps). i'm surprised they don't blow up as they were designed for the 17hmr@ 2650 fps

I do shoot some factory Hornady 17 grain in the HMR. They work okay, but having to shoot lead free now, I use the on paper and other plinker objects.
Did use some on ground squirrels and a coyote or two, prior to the law change, they did the job, but not as well as the 15.5 lead free one's, I must use not on game and even non-game critters in this commie state.

So in many aspects, going lead free has not hurt me, other than having the freedom of choice to shoot any style of bullet.

I have a bunch that I am going to try in my .17 H and .17 Fireball. Weird that they don’t perform at higher velocity.

i'll let you know how they perform at these velocities in about 11 days when furbearer season opens. i am going to shoot fox with both rifles, we'll see if there is a difference due to velocity.
worst case i go to 15.5 ntx i have loaded in my mach IV at 4300 fps

Unless I am sadly mistaken, you will be using the 15.5 NTX the most. I know I do, even in the 17 FB.

Not for a long time but I have shot probably thousands of them years ago. Mostly all on PDs…

From what I remember, they blow up excellent. I preferred running them at 3450 in my 17 ccm. They really made a loud sound on impact out to 100 yards. 150 yards and beyond not so much. But even at 300 yards that little pill would constantly make them look like they just fell asleep on impact (making me think that they must be still pretty explosive at that distance and speed). It just seemed to me that the 17 vmax was a great match with the ccm! Looking back I should have never sold any of my CCMs!

Although I did shoot the 15.5s and 17/17s in my 17AH, I just preferred the 20 gr vmax in it and larger. I had plenty of both at the time so it didn’t matter

good to hear from you gary, might have known you shot them. if i remember correctly the 17 vmax was not sold to the public.
hunting fox you can't see more then 50 yards so that's where i sighted the rifles in. the velociraptor was under .40 and the viper was a ragged hole, so it's eyeball hunting time.

checked my reloading records and found a load in the 17 velociraptor with 15.5 ntx, 10.5 mp300 4138 fps and i shot super at 100 yds, fox beware.

Several years ago, Gary sold me some of the 17 Vmax "rejects" he was getting from Hornady. I used them in my 17CCM on crows. At modest distances, 150 yds, they did a good job on crows....nothing like what the 17Rem would do, (the 17Rem explodes them), and the 17AH sorta "shatters" them, feathers are similar to "black confetti".....the 17CCM was not as dramatic as those other two 17's but still did the job.

As an aside, I did not incurr bad accuracy with the rejects.....not nearly as accurate as the 22gr Hammet's, but the Hammets would not expand on crows, just drill a hole thru them.....most of the time the crow would take the hit, fly off for 25 to 50 yds, and fall out of the sky....the Hammets were great on paper, but not a bullet to use on varmints at the relativly low velocity of the CCM. the 17 Vmaxes fixed that.

thanks for the info, did you chronograph any of your loads? did you shoot any of the 15.5 ntx's?
i may be the first to shoot a fox with the 17 vmax. going to try some mp300 as soon as i figure out a safe starting load. i work up mp300 one tenth of a gr at a time.
