as stated, 17 fb/mach iv is easy to form, easy on brass, accurate, easy on barrels, cheap on powder and bullets are still readily available.
have both 17 fb/mach iv and 20 vartarg, i tend to lean more to the 17. you can load it down to 17 hmr velocity or up almost to 17 remington or anywhere in between.
i have shot a lot of fox and the 17 is the king of saving fur, the 20 vartarg may let you test your sewing skills. no real difference on coyotes but the advantage goes to the heavier .204 bullets. if you are looking for flip factor on p-dogs the 20 vartarg gets the nod.

Not impressive, in the accuracy department. Brass is tough to find, and tougher to make. Not easy to reload.

Me ! I'd build a 20 Vartag. You can run a Teslong bore scope to see how your cleaning regiment is doing. Something you can't do with a 17.
The 20 Vartag brass, is easier to make, and it will do the job you are asking..
That's just me.

I agree. I have both. The 17 in a custom Remington 700 and the 20 in a single shot custom AR. The Vartarg shot lights out fire forming 221 formed brass. The 17 im still chasing.

Thumbs up Heck......gettum BOTH!!

Admittedly I've only one 20VT(a Cooper Varminter bought from a close friend long ago)..........BUT.....I also have about 6 or 8 rifles in 17 Mach IV. Second, only to my favorite 17.......the Javelina.

Anywho.....here's a pic of a re-barrelled H&R Model 317(to 17 Mach IV).....bought from another infamous friend....long ago.

No complaints with my 17 Fireball, works well on Pa Groundhogs. I utilize H322 and 25 Grain Bergers. Only running around 3800 FPS with excellent accuracy.[IMG][/IMG]

I bought the 1st 17 FB that came into our shop. I also shoot H322 and 25 bergers, or N133 I think? I've killed a ton of groundhogs with it out to probably 350 and they just go to sleep. I love that little SPS as a "walking varminter". I remember the last time I used it I shot 13 hogs in 13 shots walking diversions in the field after they picked the corn. I would have had more if I brought more ammo that day.

I do like the 20Vt as well. Adam Bentley put together a nice little Model 7 for me. It hits with a little more authority than the 17 but it'd be hard to choose between the 2 for me.

Sounds all very familiar. The high speed 17's work like electrocuting the prey. My 17Mach IV is a single shot BR action L461 with a heavy PacNor barrel. My 17 Remington looks just like a P317, but was built up from an L461 repeater action with a Fajen stock and a 24" Shilen CrMo barrel. What word did P.O. Ackley use to describe 17's? GZORP!

I don't have one, and wish I did. I think that the Javelina is the perfect all-around 17 and tbe perfect one for the 25 gr. bullet.

Leopold Scopes, Forester reloading equipment and Victorianox knives.

I video recorded all of my Highpower Rifle matches. Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle.

Default 17 Javelina

If anyone HAS to have a Javelina, I have a 17 Javelina barrel fitted to a Cooper Model 21 that I no longer own.

Let me know.
