Default 17 Remington Build

I am getting ready to re-barrel my 223 to a 17 REM, and would like to any recommendations as far as Twist Rate and Barrel length.

Current configuration is REM 700 with a 26" Varmint contour barrel. Would like to shoot 25gr bullets.

Thanks in advance.

Pac-Nor Select Match SS, 3 grove, 9 twist. The 9 twist will shoot both 25 and 30 grainers very well. 24" is just about right. Chamber with zero freebore, measure the necks on your loads and make the neck diameter approx .002 to .004 larger or whatever you are comfortable with, you just don't want to have to turn the outside of the necks. While you are at it, install a Jewell trigger.

Pretty much the same as what foster's said. My 17 Rem is on a L461 with a 24" Shilen 1:10 barrel. When it is used up, I will go with a 1:9, probably a PacNor.

I went with a Shilen Select 1-9” zero freebore. Accuracy has been nothing short of stellar, shooting 25-30’s. Fouls little and cleans easy.
I will have a Pacnor when this one is done. I want to see for my self if I get anything more out of it.

I have a 17 Rem 700 with a Shilen bbl, doesn't shoot well at all, but in all fairness, I think the chambering job was not good. May have Kevin Weaver take a look at it and see what he thinks......I have plenty of extra length to set it back and have a good chamber cut...so we'll see...

Odd man out here.
I went with a Lilja 9T setup for zero neck turning. This one is on a Kimber Montana and the barrel was contoured to match the Kimber contour and finished at 22". Accuracy with 25gr. and 30gr. is awesome.

I for one see no reason to ever go with a 1-10 on a .17 build. There are many, many more 1-10 guns built that won't shoot 25-30 grain bullets than 1-9 that don't shoot everything well. I am not bashing anyone who shoots a 1-10, but if you ever want to try a 25 Vmax with a 1-10, there is a really good chance that it won't shoot.

I agree, the 1/9 twist is all you need in the 17's too shoot the majority of the bullet weights that are good, all around, in it.
And most of the 25 grain bullets will do just as well.

A 1-9" twist barrel without a doubt to shoot the heavier bullets.

Remington learned that lesson clear back in the early 1970's when they first introduced the 17 Remington cartridge in their Remington 700 BDL rifle. Within three years of first production, Remington had switched from 1-10" to 1-9" twist barrels in all rifles produced.

The only 1-10" twist 17 Rem rifle that I owned besides my initial 700 BDL purchased in 1973 was a much later Cooper in 17 Rem with a 1-10" twist barrel. It did not even like the 25 grain Hornady HP bullet, so it went down the road....nice wood and all. My first 700 BDL did shoot the 25 grain Hornady HP bullet and the long extinct 25 grain Remington copper plated HP bullet extremely well. The one redeeming feature of the Cooper 1-10 twist barrel rifle was the fact that Cooper rifles have always had a good re-sale or trade value. Where I traded it off they were excited about getting it even thought I told them up front about the barrel twist issue.

I have a couple coyote rifles. 1 is my m700 it currently has a 26" rem sporter contour 1/9 twist Lilja barrel. I ordered a Manson reamer with a shorten freebore. I run almost exclusively 29 gr bullets. I feel the 26" barrel works very well with H414(w760) and the 29-30 gr bullets. Very accurate, kills like electricity. I don't shoot this one suppressed, so the slightly longer barrel is worth the velocity gain. Speed is your friend with the 17 rem.
