The sad thing is; that there are folks "out there" at every turn, ready to take advantage of others. And, the internet is a perfect place to accomplish this.

The part I hate most: it makes me cynical and suspect in most dealings with sales and service people, especially on the internet. Guess that's a healthy response, but sad to have be in that frame of mind all the time.

Example: A post on Saubier Classifieds for a good deal and it is the Poster's first post! I just ignore it thinking it"s just not worth the possible hassle!

Bill,
Was it really HP, or was it some scam artist outside of HP? If HP, it should have been ok, but it is not guaranteed. I don't, as a rule, even allow techs. from legitimate companies in my computer. What exactly was he trying to do or get?

I video recorded all of my Highpower Rifle matches. Pretty soon I am going to watch them all in reverse order so that I can watch those F Class guys GO HOME and leave us alone so that we can shoot Highpower Rifle.

This^^^^^^in spades.....

We have one through our bank for our personal at home stuff/business and my wife has one for her business for internet purchases. This way you cut your losses if someone does try to get into your pocket, and if they can't get what they want with the balance you have left on the card at any given time, such is life, even for crooks.... Many pre-paid cards can be loaded from your internet bank access with a $$ amount to cover a purchase you might be making online and nothing more. Different banks use different but similar options to protect you.

Internet business is risky unless its a well-know legit vendor like MidSouth or something similar as you can't see who you're dealing with, whether its for a minor purchase or something larger like a gun or something similar. If the internet vendor isn't someone with a legitimate store front who I can call a business number and talk directly with them, they ain't gittin' my time or my business.

One other thing......... When you Google some business name, for example, look at the link associated with it before clicking on it to make sure you're not being diverted elsewhere. For example, if you Google Amazon, make sure that it's Amazon's internet address linked to it and not some other site that is ghosting as Amazon.

I know a few folks here are breathing easier about you after hearing your explanation about what happened...... Serious street money thought maybe you had crossed over to the very dark side and the porno sites had cleaned out your bank account and given your computer an internet social disease as well...

No, Danny.
It was as Hal stated...I clicked too quickly on what was stated as "HP Tech Support" when needing help and these guys were very helpful but wanted all my info that I was not willing to give...At last, the guy was frustrated and hung up on me...HP has always been on the up and up in their service...I just need to make sure with whom I am in conversation...

I get calls all the time starting with the person stating- "this is Microsoft we have noticed your computer has been infected by a virus". The great part of this is I run a Linux environment, lol...

I should run Windows in a virtual box on my Linux box and mess with them, get their IP and explain to them they are not in control. Its sad that these people really do convince ignorant people into scams.

Never let anyone take remote access of your PC! Educate yourself on how your computer works and fix it yourself.

Ignorant though I may be I have no interest whatsoever in learning all the different systems on all the computers "yuck", way to much time indoors and it bores me to tears. Guess I didn't get the pocket liner, white socks, nerd gene, just the ignorant one . Glad I dodged the bullet on that one .

I'm sorry montdoug, I wasn't directing my statement in a personal way just a general statement. I'm ignorant towards many things, doesn't mean I'm stupid.

I apologize for over responding , stupid you obviously are not! In truth I'm a bit jealous what with being so lacking of computer skills in a computerized world. I can overhaul an engine on a truck or a motorcycle, trim a horses hoofs and shoe em but I type with two fingers and have the practical computer skills of a Gerbil, pathetic.
On the upside, I sure won't make that mistake again ("Guaranteed!") and my lack of computer skills makes for "job security" for some sharp young fellas that do . Plus which my computer is operating about 5 times faster then it did before so it's all good .
Have a good one Jingle.

The spamming phone calls, "I'm Alice with Microsoft support", are annoying enough anytime but the phone rang at 2:30am with that recorded fecus...I'd love to get a shot at whoever was behind that one.

Default Hackers behind every blade of grass (Admiral Yamamoto), well close

I kept getting from Pay Pal (likely some hacker) that my account has been compromised , it's spooky when you know they have your card number, got a new card.

DON'T EVER give out your account tracking number.

I've had false charges on my debit card before, Wells Fargo covered them all ,, so far. sgtg
