Default 17 Fireball

Looking to build a 17 Fireball before long. Just putting this out here to see what kind of groups you’re getting and loads everyone likes (17 Mach IV too). I plan on shooting 25 grainers since I’ve already got a hornet I shoot 20s out of.

Being in the communist state of California, I am limited to using lead free bullets. However that has not stopped me from shooting/hunting and in many cases the lead free Nosler and Hornady NTX's are shooting as well or better than the lead bullets I used prior to the ban on lead to save the Condor's.
Pretty well have settled on the NTX 15.5 grain over CFE Blk or 4198, for groups of around 3/4 inch at 100 yrds in my 17 Fireball.
I would work with CFE BLK when you first start out. Hornady Data site and other manuals give you start loads for various weight bullets, then work up in your rifle. Bill K

My 17 Mach IV with 20gr or 25gr bullets will shoot 0.3 to 0.4 MOA at 100yds. It is a L461 with a 1:10 PacNor barrel. It likes N133 and H322 for powders, and may try some others for grins when I get to it.

40 grain Vmax and Benchmark power will shoot .15 MOA at 200 and just over that at 300. Makes a great gopher load for reaching out and touching them. For 30 grain bullets I load 8208 for the same accuracy. Seating depth is a big deal on the three 17 FBs I have had.

Default 17 Fireball or 17 MIV Twist

I highly recommend going with a 1 in 9 twist. My L461 in 17MIV with a 1 in 10 twist will keyhole the 25 gr V-Max bullet. I am able to shoot the Hornady 25 gr HP. but the BC is significantly lower than the V-Max.

Agree, only way to go on the 17's, 1/9 twist is #1.
